Thomas Was Alone, an “indie minimalist 2D platformer about friendship and jumping and floating and anti-gravity” came out on Steam yesterday. Originally only available on Desure or IndieCity (or directly from the developer), Thomas Was Alone has still managed to become quite well-known, and – with a Metacritic score of 79 – popular.
At first glance, the game looks like an insultingly simple flash platformer, but there's a lot of depth that can't be conveyed through screenshots. Those colourful rectangles are actually a diverse cast of characters with unique skills that you'll need to progress through the 100 levels. And they have a story to tell, narrated by Danny Wallace, with beautiful music by David Housden.
Here's the game's description as listed on Steam:
Thomas Was Alone tells the story of the world's first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well, not escape: Escape is a strong word. 'Emerge' might be better. 'Emerge' has an air of importance about it, while keeping the myriad plot twists and superhero origin stories you'll discover under wraps. We didn't even mention the bouncing. That'd be overkill.
Intrigued? It's 10% off until the 19th, so you can get it for $9 (instead of $10) or £5.39 (instead of £5.99).
