Namco Gives Players A Tekken History Lesson in 8-bit

May 16, 2017 by Jordan Coetsee

Honestly, who doesn’t love anything 8-bit related in this era of gaming.

In anticipation for the upcoming Tekken 7, Namco has released an 8-bit style history lesson for fans to catch up on who’s throwing who down volcanoes, why animals are so good at martial arts, and how Paul Phoenix gets his hair like that.

The story essentially follows the Mishima clan and Heihachi’s hatred for his family members before and after him. From there we see retaliations from the likes of his son Kazuya and Kazuya’s son Jin, centred around a tournament created by Heihachi, the King of Iron Fist Tournament.

Namco has slated Tekken 7 as the “epic conclusion” to the title so there no wonder why they want fans up to date with what’s happen. So what better way to do it than in 8-bit, an art style which nearly all fighting games took on before Tekken.

Unfortunately, if you were looking forward to revisiting your role as Roger Jr. Namco have removed him due to possible outrage.

Harada hasn’t explicitly stated the details of Roger Jr’s scrapping, but it does have something to do with that viral video which surfaced on the web earlier this year.

“There was a video of a man’s dog being headlocked by a kangaroo, and he punched it in the face. It turned into a big problem,” he said. “People were complaining about him punching a kangaroo.”

Harada continued, stating that there are more animal activists than there have ever been and although they might not be gamers, hearing about people controlling characters which can punch a Kangaroo might lead to a conversation which could damage the franchise.

Tekken 7 launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on June 2, 2017.
