Speedrunner cheese05 has just done the unthinkable. Completing what many runners of Super Mario 64 long regarded as an impossible feat, the Spanish whiz managed to 100% the game in just under 100 minutes, collecting all 120 stars in a record time of 1:39:57:68. The record making run (which was performed with the Japanese version of the game because Princess Peach doesn’t read out the letter at the start of the game, saving precious seconds) beats out the previous record set by Batora324 by eight seconds – which in speedrunning terms is a huge margin.
After completing the run, cheese05 appeared too overwhelmed to speak, instead exiting the room to pass on the news to his proud grandmother. The atmosphere was not unlike when Cosmo Wright (now Narcissa Wright) first claimed the legendary 18:10 WR for The Legend of Zelda: Ocraina of Time – a record which has since been broken multiple times. Like Ocarina of Time, the Super Mario 64 speedrunning community is active and thriving – and is in fact the most popular game to speedrun from over 9,000 games submitted to speedrun.com.
