Hurricane Sandy has spent the past few days ravaging the Caribbean and then the United States, causing flooding, electrical explosions, and fires that have wiped out more than 100 houses. But the impact has been felt across the digital as well as the physical world, demonstrating how the security we feel in the persistence of the digital can still be adversely affected by natural disasters. New York City, badly affected by the storm, is the location of lots of data centres, and due to power outages and flooding many website have been shut down, including Kotaku.
Dan Amrich, community manager for Activision, took to his blog to report on another result of the disruption to New York and the company's data centres there: online connectivity issues for Call of Duty: World at War, Modern Warfare 2 (on PS3 only), Black Ops (on PS3, PC, and Wii), and all of the Guitar Hero games on every platform.
Though Activision employees have no doubt got more pressing issues like family and friends living in the area who will have been affected by the severe weather, Amrich assures readers that the company “is working on restoring full functionality as soon as possible”, though with everyone still waiting for the storm to subside completely so that the full scale of its effects can be assessed, it's not known when that will be.
It's good to know the fans are being supportive, anyway. Amrich signs off with a, “Your patience while they deal with the storm's effects is appreciated,” to which a comment responds:
“Hurry the f*** up. This is my life!”
