Microsoft will be removing the Facebook and Twitter applications from the Xbox 360 in its latest (and mandatory) Dashboard update.
Here's what a Microsoft rep had to say regarding the matter (via IGN):
We're retiring the Facebook and Twitter apps" in an effort to "streamline" app functionality on 360.
If, for some reason, you'd rather be "tweeting" or "liking" something on your Xbox 360 instead of actually playing games, Microsoft recommends using the company's web browser — Internet Explorer 9 — once it's implemented as part of the mandatory Fall Update for the Xbox 360.
Honestly, while some people might hate this, it makes sense for Microsoft to do it since they can now guarantee that someone will use Internet Explorer 9 on the Xbox 360. But then again, why would you surf or even use Twitter or Facebook on your console when you have a PC, laptop, tablet or phone lying around, no?
Will anyone miss this or should Microsoft done this years ago?
