Roads are the best way to get around in Death Stranding 2 — at least if you don’t count using fast travel — and they make deliveries a total breeze. Requisition or fabricate a vehicle and paved roads provide all the battery power you’ll need to quickly get from one settlement to another. Roads make travelling across hostile terrain so, so much easier and they’re not nearly as difficult to construct as you might think. With a little online functionality and working with strangers online, you’ll be able to rebuild a full network of roads, connecting each location to the next for a very smooth ride.
The only downside of roads is that they cost a lot of materials to create. One road isn’t enough, either. You’ll need to give materials to multiple auto-pavers to fully generate a road between some far-off locations, and some locations will never be connected via roads, like prepper bunkers. Usually, only major locations will be connected via road. But that road will keep going and going, providing a safe method for quickly driving from one major location to another.
When Do Roads Unlock?

Roads unlock early in Chapter 3 after connecting the Western Environmental Observatory to the Chiral Network. Sam will need to liberate this location as part of a Main Order at the Government’s Base bunker, which is the first location you’ll link to in the Australia region.
- The first roads you’ll encounter link Western Environmental Observatory to Smoke Hill Mine (east) and West Fort Knot (north).
- Auto-Pavers will only appear in areas connected to the Chiral Network. They can only be used for making travel easier AFTER linking facilities.
You’ll find Auto-Pavers in the environment. Auto-Pavers are installations that always appear in the same place on the map and don’t need to be placed by PCC. Instead, you’ll find these emplacements and contribute materials. Once the Auto-Paver is fully stocked up on required materials, it will build a section of road.
- Roads are built by Auto-Pavers — special installations on the map. These machines require Metal, Ceramics and Chiral Crystals to create roads.
- Roads are smooth surfaces with lights that provide power to vehicles that drive on them. Roads will also lift up off the ground to create highways to safely bypass dangerous obstacles.
Roads are designed to make travel between major settlements easier, and all cities will be connected to a road network.
How To Build Roads

To build a road, you’ll need to find an Auto-Paver. These are installations that are placed along the (unbuilt) road’s path. Usually there are two / three Auto-Pavers between each settlement. Interacting with an Auto-Paver will open a menu where materials can be donated to build the road. Depending on the length of the road, you’ll need different numbers of materials.
- Auto-Pavers require Metal, Ceramic and Chiral Crystals.
- You’ll need about 200~ Metal, 200~ Ceramic, and 300~ Chiral Crystals to construct early roads between Western Environmental Observatory and West Fort Knot.
Auto-Pavers are community projects so if you’re playing online, other players will be able to contribute to your roads — and you’ll be contributing to everyone else’s roads. Roads have durability and need to be maintained, so use your map to check on how they’re doing. They seem to only lose a fraction of durability over 24 hours, so it seems roads will last a very long time in-game.
- Even if you can’t fully contribute to an Auto-Paver, providing ANY resources will give you a bonus to your Servicemanship and Bridge Link Porter scores.
- These scores will also increase dramatically for rebuilding roads — making roads one of the simplest ways to rank up.
How To Get Materials

The biggest problem is finding all the materials you’ll need. Materials are both hard-to-find and plentiful if you know where to look. Especially early in the game.
- Metal and Ceramics are stockpiled at Brigand / Bandit bases. Hack M.U.L.E.s to find large quantities of these materials.
- Search the large bandit camp northeast of Western Environmental Observatory. You’ll always find lots of Metal and Ceramics — both in postboxes and just in the environment or carried by humans.
Chiral Crystals are harder to find. Large quantities drop from Giant BTs, but these aren’t common. Defeated BTs also drop Chiral Crystals, but if you need a large supply, check near mines.
- Smoke Hill Mine has a quantity of Chiral Crystals. Use the scanner to spot them.
- Mine North of F1 has a huge quantity of Chiral Crystals. On first visit, we collected over 2,000+ Chiral Crystals. Look in the tar ponds and use a Tri-Cycle to easily scoop up everything in the area.
Chiral Crystals spawn in large clusters at tar pits. Don’t be afraid to wade into the tar to collect all the crystals. The more you have stockpiled, the better.
And that should get you started building roads in Death Stranding 2. Roads are one of the most useful installations any porter can construct in the wasteland, so always keep an eye out for more.
