It’s time to get medieval. This list will highlight some of the most anticipated medieval games slated to launch in 2025. That said, we’re not ranking these games in any particular order. Instead, these are just some games we’re excited to check out when they launch.
#22 Gothic 1 Remake
Gothic was released all the way back on the PC in 2001, and this action RPG is getting a new lease on life. A remake is in the works for Gothic, so players can either enjoy this game installment all over again or for the very first time. This game’s narrative is centered around a prison used to mine ore. These precious resources were sought after, so prisoners were forced to operate the mine. A magical barrier was crafted to keep prisoners within the mines to ensure no one could escape. However, things quickly go sideways, and now the prisoners have gained control. Factions are brewing, and in the middle of the newfound chaos is our protagonist, a new prisoner.
#21 Blight Survival
Imagine a war between two nations. Imagine the carnage that happens when the fighting continues without end. Now imagine that something else emerges within the battlefields that have contained that war. A blight unto the world that is reanimating the bodies of the fallen and turning them into monsters.
You and your allies have been paid well to go into the godforsaken battlefields and take down the creatures that have been blighted. The four-person co-op game will test you as you attempt to put down the reborn creatures. Craft your knight to be the kind of fighter you desire, then use various weapons to strike the cursed entities.
#20 The Quinfall
The Quinfall has one big attribute that developers are boasting, and that’s this MMORPG will have a massive map to play within. Players are encouraged to explore this medieval world as it seems there’s plenty of content to stumble upon. It looks like players will chart out a unique adventure as just another citizen of Quinfall. What you do is up to you. Learn of the different gods that rule the universe, partake in a growing civil war that is spreading through the lands, cause chaos, or attempt to bring peace back into this world. With a massive map, there are bound to be countless quests you will find yourself in the middle of.
#19 Crimson Desert
Crimson Desert is yet another action-adventure game with some RPG mechanics. The game is developed by the creators of Black Desert Online, however, it is not an online exclusive game this time. In Crimson Desert you will visit a huge continent called Pywel. After king Demeniss went into a coma many people started a rebellion. You play as Macduff who is a warrior. You need to win the battle to reclaim the long-lost lands. Gameplay often relies on fighting your enemies. Apart from usual humans, monsters, and such, you will also stumble upon huge beasts that serve somewhat as bosses. The combat is mostly meleeing with a slight addition of bows, crossbows, etc. Crimson Desert just looks stunning already, and only time will tell if the gameplay delivers on its promises.
#18 Avowed
Obsidian Entertainment is one of the kings of the RPG genre. They’ve made incredible 3D RPGs, 2D RPGs, top-down RPGs and more. So when they announced their newest title, Avowed, people were interested from the start.
You’ll play a character who is sent to a distant land to investigate a plague, but when things start getting more personal, you dive deeper and learn terrible truths that could destroy the world!
What you do in this land and how you fight the many monsters and people within is up to you. Become the warrior or mage you want to be, and seek out a way to save the world.
#17 Chrono Odyssey
Unlike many other games on this list, Chrono Odyssey is an MMORPG developed within the Unreal Engine 5. The team used the engine to the best of their abilities to deliver “unparalleled graphics” for an MMORPG.
The game will put you in the realm of Setera, where you’ll explore, fight, and watch as the land changes with the seasons. The title also boasts an impressive combat system that features six classes to choose from and a kind of unpredictability that will keep you on your toes.
So if you’re looking for a new MMO experience to enjoy, this is one you might want to consider.
#16 Project Awakening
Project Awakening is a game we’ve been waiting on for several years now. Initially unveiled as an upcoming PlayStation 4 title, the project remains in development. However, it’s not canceled yet, and we can expect this game to release for the PlayStation 5. This looks to be a fantasy action game where it’s described to be a bit like Monster Hunter and a Souls-like game experience. So we can expect some brutal challenges and massive boss fights. But again, we’ll have to wait and see if Project Awakening makes any new moves for a release this year, along with a breakdown of what to expect with this game. So at the very least, you might want to keep Project Awakening on your radar.
#15 The Awakener: Risen
If you’re looking for a medieval saga that has been around for a bit, then you might want to check out The Awakener: Risen, as it’s the next entry in the franchise. In it, you’ll play a character who is driven by both revenge and redemption, and that means you’ll have quite a challenge ahead of you as you wade through the medieval battlefields ahead of you.
You’ll have a vast world to explore, and that means you’ll have plenty to do within it! You will choose the adventures you have, so don’t be afraid to see just how far you can push things
#14 Vindictus: Defying Fate
Vindictus: Defying Fate wants players to enjoy their experience and craft something special by imbuing their avatar character with personality, style, and skill that ensures they connect with them. You’ll start simple by creating the character you want, where no detail is too small.
Then, you’ll venture out into the world and find yourself clashing with all manner of beasts. The game’s intensity is what the dev team prides itself on. They want every battle to be special and challenging, which means you’ll be on your toes throughout.
Can you rise up in this world full of monsters? Or will you be cut down in due time?
#13 Dungeons & Kingdoms
While a little on the nose with the title, Dungeons & Kingdoms is a special medieval RPG with you foraging for a new life while helping those in need. You see, you are part of a refugee group who had to leave their homeland to try and survive.
As you arrive in new lands, you’ll start from scratch and do what you can to make things work. Start small, then build up your village so it can slowly become the kingdom your people deserve.
The more you grow, the more dangers you’ll face. So don’t get complacent. Once you rise up, fight to keep everything and everyone in your care strong!
#12 The Wayward Realms
When a video game is created by those who truly know what they’re doing, the possibilities are endless. The Wayward Realms is one such attempt at those endless possibilities, as the team is comprised of industry veterans who wanted to make an immersive RPG experience that would get a whole new classification when they were done.
Welcome to The Archipelago, where over 100 islands await your arrival and want to see what you’ll do to them. Specifically, you can become part of a powerful nation, or you can fight to create one under your open banner!
With so many elements at play, the game will never truly be stagnant, and your choices will affect everything that happens.
#11 VOIN
How’s this for a twist on the usual “origin story” for these kinds of games? In VOIN, you’re not playing a human hero that was “destined for greatness”; instead, you are an elemental being that a mage formed to try and stop a plague that was infecting the land. Just as important, your goal isn’t solely to purge the plague but to become stronger and rise as a true weapon of the world’s creators. Yeah, that sounds like fun.
The game’s combo is special and asks you to react quickly to string together combos and see how much damage you can truly do. How many hits you take depends on how quickly you react.
#10 Mandragora
While it’s true that many medieval gaming worlds are filled with terrors, one could argue that Mandragora is one of the worst ever devised. In the game, monsters have taken over humanity, and those whoremain have decided that a life of ignorance within the walls they’ve created is better than trying to take the world back.
You are not one who believes in this course, so you’ll strike out to take out the monsters and reclaim what humanity deserves. With Metroidvania influences and a visual style that helps it stand out from the crowd, you’ll want to see just how deep this madness and monster-filled world can go and whether anyone can survive it.
#9 King Arthur: Legends Rise
There are many legends that get adapted into the video game space, and the tale of King Arthur is no different. However, with King Arthur: Legends Rise, you’ll find a more “power-focused” version of Arthurian legend, as you’ll gather allies to take on the enemies of Camelot and bring together a party that is unstoppable.
Oh, but you’re not merely facing armies of men who seek Arthur’s throne. Instead, you’ll face off against beasts, magical entities, and even the gods themselves!
The more you do, the more you can grow your abilities, unlock powerful weapons, and expand Camelot to the greatness you know it deserves.
#8 Robin Hood: Shadow of Nottingham
The tale of Robin Hood is one that many has told over the centuries, but in Robin Hood: Shadow of Nottingham, you’ll get a more “otherworldly” take on things. In this interpretation, the vile Prince John has made allies that allowed him to take the throne from his brother, King Richard. Thus, when Robin Hood returns to Nottingham, he’s labeled an outlaw and banished.
Knowing that something terrible is afoot, he embraces his outlaw nature and fight enemies of the one true king, and attempts to rally the people so that John can be put in his place.
Fight, sneak, and learn the truth so that Nottingham can be safe once more!
#7 Ertugrul of Ulukayin
How far would you go to save your brother? What if finding him was just one part of a grander journey that could affect the world as a whole? In Ertugrul of Ulukayin, you’ll find out the answers to both of those questions.
You play a Turkish man in the 13th century who starts by fighting a war against the Mongolian army and then finds himself facing down foes he could’ve never expected. With dangers all around, he can only trust his two companions to aid him and guide him in times of need.
The battles ahead will be fraught with peril, but you know you must keep pushing forward, or else the people will fall.
#6 Alkahest
In Alkahest, you live in a medieval world that is hanging on the knife’s edge of disaster. After all, the three main houses that attempt to keep the peace in this land don’t get along that much, and there are plenty of monsters ready to stir things up.
You play the offspring of a minor lord in this land, and that means you have to work hard to earn everything you want in your life.
When the opportunity arises, seize it and test your might on quests that will showcase both your swordsmanship and your creative thinking. Use the environment to your advantage and receive glory for doing well.
#5 The Witcher Remake
We live in an age of remakes and remasters, and while many developers and publishers are fine with doing that for titles that aren’t that old, some games truly deserve a new “coat of paint” and updated mechanics. One such medieval title that fits that mold is The Witcher Remake.
This was the title that helped get CD Projekt Red a lot of credibility, so it’ll be interesting to see how the game looks with modern engines powering it, as well as some necessary adjustments to the gameplay to make it more reminiscent of later titles.
You’ll see Geralt of Rivia in a whole new light, and that’s not a bad thing.
#4 Outward 2
When you play Outward 2, you’re not just going on a journey, you’re going on a journey that will be defined by how you think about things, how well you prepare, and if you take care of yourself. That might seem like basic stuff, but this quest will not be easy, and if you take it lightly, you’re going to die.
Not just that, there are plenty of dangers to overcome, and you won’t be able to “save your problems away,” as the game doesn’t allow that. You will have to live and die by your choices and mistakes. So if you screw up too much, you’ll have to start over.
#3 Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
It’s time to return to Bohemia. This time, though, you’ll find yourself playing a different character and seeing things on a whole new scale than before. In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, you’ll play Henry, a young man whose life is upended, resulting in a quest for vengeance against those who took everything from him.
It won’t be easy, but you’ll become a rebel and learn to fight so you can take on knights, brigands, thieves and more on your journey to see justice done.
Your choices affect how things go within the story. Plus, you might even be able to win yourself a partner if you play your cards right.
#2 Doom: The Dark Ages
It might seem odd for a franchise like this, which has largely been set in a sci-fi future with all manner of guns, to suddenly take a “medieval pit stop,” but Doom: The Dark Ages has a purpose for doing so. Instead of continuing the story of the Doomslayer and seeing what antics he can get up to next, this game will show you the origins of the character. As you might have surmised, it’s one that is very violent.
Due to it being set within the medieval period, you’ll find new kinds of weapons to wield against monsters, which means you’ll get brutal in a more “personal way” than before.
#1 Fable
If you were a fan of the original Fable series, you’ll likely want to take a look at the reboot that’s coming out in 2025. The game will place you in the familiar realm of Albion but allow you to craft a new journey for yourself, depending on what you want to do.
As you would expect from the series, there’s very much a “fairy tale” or fantasy-style to the world, meaning there is might, magic, monsters, and plenty of choices to decide who you want to be. Plus, the game’s trailers paint an incredibly detailed visual experience, so it’ll be interesting to see how the world looks when it’s fully rendered.
