Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is much more of a traditional game that we’re used to — there’s a robust, full singleplayer campaign and a full multiplayer mode that’s actually worth playing for anyone that wants to chainsword through enemies of the Emperor. There’s also an infinitely replayable and randomized cooperative mode where you and two other Space Marines can raid enemy-infested levels, all to complete a major objective related to the main story. All of these modes are robust, with everything we’d expect from a triple-AAA shooter like Call of Duty except its set in the gritty, violent world of Warhammer 40K. This is one of the best games of the year, so let’s break down exactly what you’re getting after you install.
How Long Is The Campaign?
The main campaign of Space Marine 2 sends your futuristic super-soldier to three different planets, each one in a state of all-out war against an alien menace. Creatures called the Tyranids are swarming the system, converting life into biomass and transforming the worlds with their seemingly infinite hordes. As a small team of Space Marines, you’re tasked to fight back the Xenos menace.
- The campaign is 8 missions long. Each mission takes about 45~ minutes of gameplay to complete. Between each mission, you’ll be sent back to your Battle Barge — a large ship where you will talk to other characters and can choose your loadout.
- In total, the campaign took us about 7~ hours on the normal difficulty level while playing solo.
While that doesn’t sound very long, there’s actually a lot more to the game than just the campaign. The entire story can be played cooperatively with two friends. Three players can tackle the campaign together or jump into Operations.
Operations is unlocked right away after finishing the first tutorial mission but includes SPOILERS for the campaign if you start early. We recommend playing through the entire campaign before starting Operations if you care about the story and don’t want any spoilers — if you don’t mind, then jump right into Operations.
How Long Is The Coop Campaign?
The Operations game mode is much meatier and includes full customization for your Space Marine. You can create your own character and customize their armor fully. You’ll unlock new Space Marine Chapters — armor colors — and new pieces for your chest, helmet, shoulders, boots and more.
There are multiple classes to play, each one with their own special power and skill trees to level up. Operations is a PVE mode similar to something like Left 4 Dead — you’ll enter a level with your team then progress, fighting hordes of monsters while attempting to complete objectives. Random events like horde attacks will occur and special miniboss monsters will spawn periodically to ambush you. There are limited resources to collect like Healing Items and Ammo. Whatever weapons and gear you select before starting the mission you’ll be stuck with until you find Loadout Stations.
- Currently, there are 6 Operations missions — or 6 levels. Each level takes between 30-60 minutes to complete depending on your difficulty level and whether you’re playing solo or cooperatively.
- Playing through these missions once will take about 5-6~ hours to complete. All missions can be played solo with bots.
While there are only 6 operations currently, the developers plan on releasing more — more missions and expanded enemy rosters to add more variety to the missions you’ll be tackling. This mode can be replayed for dozens of hours if you want to experience everything there is to offer and level up your marine to maximum.
