You’re looking for the Sphinx in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and we found it. One of the biggest mysteries in the game is exceptionally well-hidden and only the most curious players will uncover the hidden location of this wild monster. Unlike all the other monsters in Dragon’s Dogma 2, the Sphinx doesn’t attack you immediately. Instead, it tests you with a series of riddles.
We’re not talking about those riddles today. Instead, we’re going to share a no-spoilers path to reaching the Sphinx as early as possible. The creature is hidden in a hard-to-reach location, so be prepared for some intense battles — and the riddles require more than just a big brain. Learn exactly what it takes to find the Sphinx. There’s a lot more going on here than the most infamous Sphinx riddle.
How To Find The Sphinx
The Sphinx is located far west of Vernworth, the Capital of the northern nation. Before attempting to reach the Sphinx, you’ll want to be about Level 20. Bring a Camping Kit because the dungeon leading to the Sphinx is long and difficult.
- Travel to the Checkpoint Rest Town to rest and prepare. Alternatively, travel to the Ancient Battleground. The Ancient Battleground is north of Checkpoint Rest Town — enter the area from the east entrance (instead of the west) to avoid the Drake and encounter an NPC with the ‘Tolled to Rest‘ quest. This quest will automatically take us deeper into the dungeon, but it is not required.
To Find the Sphinx: Reach the Ancient Battleground area. To find the Ancient Battleground, follow the road Harve Village, then cross the bridge to the mountain pass. From here, you can access the Misty Marshes. Travel west and then north to avoid the marsh. Go to the old castle called the Ancient Battleground to the west of the Misty Marshes.
Progress Through The Ancient Battleground
Avoid the giant Drake outside and enter the main castle entrance by following the winding road to the gate. Inside, you’ll have to deal with skeletons and other magical undead. Enter the interior and wind around until you can access the upper level of the castle where a Cyclops guards a chest in a courtyard. If you’re completing the ‘Tolled to Rest‘ quest, you’ll be led to an interior treasure room. Just down the hall, you’ll find stairs and a ladder leading to the Cyclops arena.
- Defeat the Cyclops. Like any Cyclops, aim for the eye to deal high damage and eventually topple it. Once toppled, just deal damage to the eye until it is dead. This Cyclops shouldn’t be a challenge. It guards a chest contained a powerful Hammer called the Black Matter Hammer. This weapon can be equipped by Warriors.
From the Cyclops arena, climb the ladder to the left of the chest and jump through the ruins. This leads to a cave entrance called the Worldsend Cavern.
Crossing Worldsend Cavern
Defeat the undead mages inside the first room of the cavern and you’ll find a campsite. Use it to rest, then progress into a room with a hole in the center.
- NOTE: There’s a secret breakable wall to the right. Smash it open to progress further.
Fighting Phantoms: This leads to a passage guarded by Phantoms and Phantasms. To defeat these monsters, you need elemental damage. Bring a Mage that can imbue your weapons with magic damage or use magic-damage yourself to destroy these ghosts. They’ll possess your party members and sap their health.
- Follow the path until you reach a treasure room with a ‘Ring of Grit‘ in the center. You can ignore the chests or collect them — collecting any items here will spawn more Phantoms.
- The opposite corridor leads to an exterior courtyard. Entering this area will activate a Golem — a monster you probably haven’t encountered before.
Defeat the Golem. The Golem is a far more powerful monster, with the ability to smash your Pawns and fires streaks of killer lasers from its eye. It is slow but surprisingly strong — and it takes no damage from normal attacks. To damage it you must target the glowing stones in its arms, leg and head.
- Destroying the glowing weak point stones will stun it heavily. I recommend destroying the head stone first as it’s by far the most difficult to reach. It will also go berserk and turn red, becoming far more aggressive. Destroy the head stone first and the rest will be much easier to handle.
Accessing The Mountain Shrine
The exterior area is the Ancient Ruins. You can fight the Golem or simply sprint right past it. This leads to the Shrine Corridor. Exiting the corridor, you’ll get a good view of the Misty Marshes far below. Take the stairs up, and you’ll encounter the Mountain Shrine.
The Mountain Shrine is where you’ll find the Sphinx. Instead of battling this monster, you’ll need to solve its five riddles. There’s a campsite nearby on the cliffs to the left. Go there and rest, then save your game before attempting to solve the Sphinx’s riddles. One slip up and you’ll be dead. But, the Sphinx has incredible rewards you won’t find anywhere else.
For completing the very first reward, you’ll earn a Wakestone and a unique potion that allows you to shrink NPCs and store them in the bottle. Very weird — but also extremely fun. Every riddle has a special item just like this. If you want to get them all and open the giant chest, you’ll need to solve all the riddles of the Sphinx.
