Look, right now in many parts of the world, it’s cold, very cold even. So cold that snow is on the ground for many of you as you read this. Snow happens in video games quite a lot, and here are 25 examples you’ll find on Xbox One.
#25 SnowRunner
Since this is a list about “snow games,” we thought we’d start with a full-on game about snow and dealing with it.
SnowRunner is a title where you’ll get to be a truck driver in some of the worst conditions you’ll find on the road. If not obvious, that means dealing with ice and snow primarily. You’ll have to go to the frozen tundra and work through the terrain to make your deliveries.
Over time, if you’re successful, you’ll improve your ride and ensure you can take on bigger challenges. But don’t underestimate the road you’re on, or it could backfire on you. So do you think you can be a good driver?
#24 Fall Guys
We know what you’re thinking, “Wait, there’s snow in Fall Guys?” The answer is both yes and no.
If you were to play a standard round of the “game show,” you wouldn’t see snow, more than likely. However, the video game, like many others, loves doing seasonal content. One of those was a “Snowball Survival” mode that really put you to the test.
Why? Because the snowballs they threw at you were huge! Dodging them was no easy feat.
Plus, there are outfits for the beans that will give you a wintery vibe. Yes, we know it’s not much, but it counts, so it’s on this list.
#23 Rocket League
Rocket League remains one of the most popular games around, but is it one that has snow in it? Technically, yes, via a very specific mode.
The “Snow Day” mode, which you can still access, allows you to change the terrain and the game you play to fit the winter months. First, the field will be covered in snow to set the mood. Then, instead of a giant soccer ball to play with, you’ll need to get a hockey puck into a goal.
Get it? Because hockey is a cold sport? It kind of speaks for itself.
So if you’re looking to change things up and want a “wintery feel” to your next game, try the Snow Day mode.
#22 World of Tanks
World of Tanks is a game that lets you take all sorts of vehicles, and, ok, we’re kidding, it’s a game about tanks. Specifically, you’ll get the opportunity to command some of the most powerful tanks in history and set them loose on the battlefield to try and conquer your opponents.
The terrain of the battles will change depending on where you want to fight, meaning that snowy terrain is something for you to look forward to.
But you’ll truly enjoy finding all the tanks you can command and putting them to work. Then, use them wisely in conjunction with other players to claim victory!
#21 Minecraft
If you’ve played Minecraft long enough, you’ll know where all the cold areas are where you can find snow. You merely need to go to the cold biomes and let the snow fall.
The best part is you can harvest that snow and make snow blocks to build whatever you want in your winter wonderland. Given how creative people can be in the game, you’ll likely find lots of snow sculptures around the place.
But that, of course, is only the tip of the iceberg. Pun intended.
The game lets you craft whatever you want from the materials you collect. There’s even a survival mode where you can test your skills in.
#20 Mafia II Definitive Edition
Sometimes you want to play the bad guy, and Mafia II Definitive Edition lets you be that.
Following World War II, Vito Scaletta gets roped into a crime family because of a family debt. Now he must work for the family and prove himself by helping them expand their empire in Empire Bay, New York.
The booming city is on the cusp of something special, and the “family” wants to use that to their advantage. So complete tasks, work your way through the ranks to prove your value to the family and get the rewards that come with it.
So, where’s the snow? It’s New York! You’re going to see snowfall there!
#19 Dirt 5
How many racing experiences genuinely let you go off-road and have a blast as you do it? If you’ve been looking for a title to do that in, get Dirt 5.
The title will take you across the world and let you tear it up in the dirt, mud, snow, ice, and other surfaces to show your skills.
You’ll have numerous vehicles to drive in and plenty of ways to test them as you battle your friends and other players in the multiplayer mode.
From Brazil to Norway, epic tracks await you! So get in your car and race your heart out!
#18 Kona
In Canada, during the year 1970, a wealthy industrialist has undergone numerous acts of vandalism on his property. Naturally, he seeks the truth of what happened, so he brings in a private detective named Carl Faubert.
But when Carl arrives in Kona, where his new client lives, no one is around. Trapped there by a blizzard of seemingly supernatural origins, Carl must navigate the area, survive it, and unlock the mysteries within.
A deep story-driven game awaits you here. Survive and struggle through the cold to find clues and seek the answers that are buried within the snow. But will you be able to find them all?
#17 South Park The Stick Of Truth
“Hello, new kid. Your arrival was foretold by Trey!”
With those words, South Park The Stick Of Truth begins a grand adventure that will take you across the legendary and infamous town of South Park to stop a war a thousand years in the making.
No, really, they’re going full RPG on this, and that’s not a bad thing!
The series’ creators put everything they have, metaphorically speaking, into the game to make it a deep experience that gamers would love. You’ll meet classic characters, battle terrifying threats, and seek the Stick of Truth to ensure that you are the coolest kid in town!
#16 Forza Horizon 4
Racing games often take you to different terrain, but only a few will take you across a whole country. Forza Horizon 4 is one such title that does that, and it does it in style.
The game will take you to a recreation of Great Britain. Once you’re on the ground with your car you can do whatever you please! The title has an “open-ended” campaign, so you’re advancing the game no matter what path you take, the car you use, or the challenge you undergo.
As you go through the world, the seasons change, and you’ll find yourself gliding across water, snow, mud, and everything in between as you drive through the land.
#15 Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
So, which version of the game are we talking about here? We’re talking about the original version, as that game has a mission called Cliffhanger that’ll take you to a snowy mountain where you must complete a task as Soap McTavish.
The mission is to reach a Russian Airbase deep in the mountains of Kazakhstan and retrieve a broken piece of a satellite that landed in the area.
You will feel the cold as you wander around the mountains and the base. Plus, you’ll have to have your head on a swivel to ensure enemy operatives do not catch you. Good luck!
#14 ARK Survival Evolved
When it comes to survival, you must be able to do it across all terrains and no matter the circumstances that you find yourself in. Survival isn’t just what you know; it’s about how you use it to keep going.
ARK Survival Evolved is an excellent example of starting with nothing yet finding a way to survive. You wind up on an island with nothing, not even clothes. You must work your way around the island, gathering supplies, building items, and expanding your technology base to take on the island’s threats.
Do you think you have what it takes to survive on the island?
#13 Far Cry 4
Of the many places the fan-favorite franchise has taken you, only Far Cry 4 can say that you can traverse through the snow regularly.
That’s because your journey to honor your mother takes you to the Himalayas and to the small nation of Kyrat. It’s there that a civil war is going on, and you become a part of it. You’ll go through forests, mountains, cities, and more to learn the truth about what’s happening and how you should handle everything.
Fight for survival as you gather supplies, hunt animals, and take out enemy forces. What will Kyrat be like when you get done with it? Jump in and find out!
#12 Tom Clancy’s The Division
Tom Clancy’s The Division is a bit ironic, considering what happened a few years after it came out. Thankfully, things in the world never got this bad, but it was close.
The title puts you in New York City. A pandemic has swept through the five boroughs, and society slowly fell apart. The people’s basic needs couldn’t be met, so they struck out to get what they needed by any means necessary.
Take back the city as an agent of The Division. Complete missions to restore peace to parts of the city, take out enemies who wish to continue the chaos and ensure that you survive to see the fruits of your labor come to life.
#11 Red Dead Redemption 2
You are Arthur Morgan, a man, and an outlaw via the Van der Linde gang. Unfortunately, the “Wild West” isn’t what it used to be, and the crackdown on crime has sent you and your crew on the run.
With bounty hunters and the government on their tail, Arthur and his fellow outlaws must traverse the country to escape their sights and stay safe. But as time goes on, friction starts to build in the ranks, and the gang’s fate is anything but certain.
You’ll see snow in this game as you traverse certain areas. But focus more on the vast world and the characters that comprise it. That’ll give you more entertainment.
#10 Riders Republic
If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping experience that’ll put you to the test, Riders Republic is it. Plus, you’ll get to have that experience with your friends!
The game puts you as riders who want nothing more than to have a blast going through the world’s national parks and tearing them up on their bikes or other craft.
You’ll get to go down mountains packed with snow, desert canyons where you can grind up the dirt, and more. The amount of things you can do in the title is impressive, and by having dozens of players in each race or competition, the challenge will always be there.
#9 The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
Here’s a game that recently got a next-gen update, and that means you’ll experience the snow in even greater detail!
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt puts you back in the saddle as Geralt of Rivia. When his adopted daughter Ciri comes under attack by the vile Wild Hunt, he must race to protect her while also dispatching all manner of creatures that come his way.
The game takes you to various areas and terrains, so you’ll see snow in abundance. But be mindful of what creatures may live in the snow, or other areas, or else you might find yourself in quite a predicament.
#8 Assassin’s Creed 3
Set in the Revolutionary War, Assassin’s Creed 3 puts you as Connor, a young assassin who was trained after Templars wiped out his tribe.
Now he must get his revenge, stop the Templar plot, and help burgeoning America win the war against the British.
The seasons of the colonies will change as the story progresses, which means you’ll have to deal with the snowy weather when winter comes. Add to that; you’ll be able to build a homestead, meet legendary figures from the colonies, and affect history.
So if you’re ready to put on the hood once again, it’s time to go to war and fight for freedom.
#7 Star Wars Battlefront
Why is Star Wars Battlefront on this list? Because you get to go to the planet, Hoth! Duh.
Regardless of that ice planet, the game is perfect for those who love the franchise set in a galaxy far, far away. You’ll be able to relieve some of the classic battles of the series from both the side of good and evil. Deploy troops and take over checkpoints so you can control the map.
Then, unleash legendary characters to help turn the tide of battle! Whether on the ground, in the air, or in space, you’ll have quite the challenge ahead of you. May the force be with you.
#6 Batman Arkham Origins
Made by the team at WB Montreal, who recently released another game in the DC Comics universe, Batman Arkham Origins puts you as the Dark Knight during one of the most dangerous nights of his life.
Just in time for Christmas, Black Mas has put out a $50 million bounty on Batman. So whoever takes him out, gets the cash.
The hit has lured in killers from all over, including assassins like Deathstroke, Deadshot, Firefly, Lady Shive, and so on. You’ll need to overcome a cold Gotham as you traverse the city to take down these villains before they take you out. All the while solving the mystery of why the bounty was placed.
#5 Rise of The Tomb Raider
Rise of The Tomb Raider was the second title in the reboot by Crystal Dynamics. The first game put Lara Croft on an island she had to survive. But here, she’ll be heading to Siberia.
If you don’t know, Siberia has LOTS of snow. Just saying.
What’s more, this is the game where Lara Croft earns the name “Tomb Raider” as she must search for a lost city and uncover the truth about an ancient artifact before the mysterious group “Trinity” gets it first.
So climb, dive, zipline, and do whatever else it takes to reach the lost city. Then, solve puzzles, fight bad guys, and get the artifact.
#4 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would be a top title, even if you didn’t see snow in it. Thankfully, you’ll find plenty of snow between the mountain areas and some of the terrains you must cross.
You are the Dragonborn, a being able to make things happen via your roars. You’ll travel across the land of Skyrim and create your own path and legacy. The game is packed with hundreds of hours of content between the main campaign, the side quests, and the DLC.
Become a warrior, a mage, a master of all dragons, a vampire, or something else entirely! Your adventure awaits!
#3 Frostpunk
Given that it has “frost” in its title, you can see why we put it so high on this list. Right?
Regardless, Frostpunk is a post-apocalyptic city-building game built upon the concept of heat. Specifically, the world has frozen over, and you build the last human city upon a significant heat source.
But as you try to expand the city and, by extension, the human race, you must make hard choices revolving around using heat and how the people live. How far will you go to expand and create? Will you sacrifice the people’s comfort to ensure you make a new building? Or will you focus more on the people and only build things slowly?
Play the game and find out!
#2 Metro Exodus
While many of these titles only slightly feature snow, here is one where it’s a vital part of the gameplay and setting.
Metro Exodus is the climax of the franchise in many respects. After years of dealing with post-apocalyptic fallout, you must lead a team of soldiers across the Russian wilderness to find a place where the remaining survivors can live.
A profound expedition awaits you as you trudge across the frozen country. There will be dangers all around you. So work with your team and ensure you survive to find the promised land and give hope to others. Will you reach the end, or die trying?
#1 The Long Dark
We started with a game that dealt primarily with snow, and we’re ending the list in the same way.
The Long Dark is hailed as one of the greatest survival games ever made. You play as a person stuck in the Canadian wilderness after an apocalyptic event, and you’ll have to do whatever it takes to survive.
The game prizes itself on its “no handholding” style of gameplay. You must take care of your player character as if they are you. Keep them warm, keep them fed, keep them healthy, and find things to make your quality of life better.
Add that to a deep story mode, and you can see why the game is so beloved.
