Sonic Frontiers is finally here, and we can safely say that Sonic is back…more or less. Frontiers’ does have some teething problems, and it certainly won’t shake everyone’s world – but for the fans, well, it’s pretty darn snazzy. Not only that, fan favourite Big The Cat makes his return with a brand new fishing minigame.

We are suckers for a good fishing minigame, and whilst Sonic Frontiers’ outing isn’t the most complex or in-depth, it is fun and rewarding enough to be worth the occasional trip. We’ve compiled a short guide to help you find the minigame, how it works, and what rewards you can nab just by hoiking a few fish to your purple mate.

Where To Find Big

Big, like just about every character in Sonic Frontiers, is not actually on the overworld. Instead, he exists in some kind of limbo between digital dimensions. At least, that’s what we assume. It’s not exactly fleshed out.

You can find him as early as Kronos, and you can make your way to him almost immediately after finding a couple of Chaos Emeralds. Now, finding him with a foggy map is far more difficult than hunting him down with it revealed, so we advise hitting up some minigames. You can reference the screenshot provided to find his exact location. In short, he is on the southeastern edge of Kronos.

How Does Fishing Work?

Fishing is incredibly simple. You take your rod, you cast it into a school of fish, and when you get a bite, you press the ‘Action Button’. This will bring up a red ring, and all you have to do is press the ‘Action Button’ again when those two rings meet, and bam, you have yourself a fish.

Well, we say fish. It could be a tin can. Or a signpost. Heck, it could be a treasure chest or a lost scroll. The possibilities aren’t endless, but there’s plenty to yank up from the depths of whatever pool you are standing next to.

Everything you catch is worth Tokens, and these Tokens can be exchanged for items. These items are incredibly useful. So useful that you could bypass most of the game’s mandatory (and optional…) collecting and just buy them all with Tokens.

The catch (pun intended) is that for every cast of a line, you need to pay Big a purple coin (the price increases the further you progress through the game). These are somewhat hard to find if you don’t know where to look. As a general rule, if you see something – anything – with even the faintest elevation (giant tower, a mountain, a small hut), then there are probably a couple of coins stashed up there.

Rewards For Fishing

We’ve already touched on rewards, but here is a complete list of items you can redeem with Big:

ItemToken Cost
Portal GearTBC
Egg Memo15
Memories5
Chaos Emerald Vault Key15
Red Seed Of Power 2
Blue Seed Of Defense2
+20 Lost Koco3
+100 Rings 1
+50 Skill Pieces1

What Are Golden Tickets?

You will occasionally nab yourself a Golden Ticket (or three). These are incredibly valuable items that can be exchanged for ANY item in Big’s shop, regardless of cost. Of course, we recommend you spend these on the most expensive items in the store, such as Egg Memos. This way you will be gaining maximum value from each Golden Ticket you find.

You can find Golden Tickets in Chests dredged up when fishing.

We have more Sonic Frontiers guides on the way, so keep your eyes peeled. Until then, enjoy blazing a trail through Sonic’s latest (and arguably greatest) adventure.
