There are costumes in God of War: Ragnarok — but it isn’t what you think. Only companions can wear costumes, which are purely cosmetic and don’t affect the character stats at all. Each character gets an array of different outfits from humble hunter clothes to resplendent armor of the gods. If you want to customize your favorite characters, here’s a quick rundown of all the costumes we’ve found. Take a look at the outfit in the gallery below, with explanations for unlocking each one. Just beware of some spoilers. Atreus isn’t the only character that can unlock costumes.
Earlier reports this year indicated that there would be a transmog system in God of War: Ragnarok. Transmog essentially means that you could change Kratos’s look without sacrificing the stats on the armor you want to wear. Only late-game players will be able to use transmog — you’ll need to upgrade Kratos’s gear to maximum level before you can change how it looks. Before the end, the closest thing to cosmetics is the Armor system for companions. You can freely change companion costumes whenever you want, and you’ll unlock more as you progress through the story. Check out the full guide below to learn more about cosmetic armor.

How To Wear Cosmetic Armor
Armor is a cosmetic-only type of gear you’ll unlock for companions in God of War: Ragnarok. Armor can only be equipped to companions — not Kratos — and serves no benefit toward your companion’s stats. Companions can change armor at any time through the Character Menu.
- Open the Character Menu by tapped [Touchpad].
- Press [L2 / R2] to select the Armor tab.
- Press [L1 / R1] to select your companion.
- Select Armor to open the cosmetic armor menu.
Armor is a single set that changes the entire costume of your companion. You’ll earn new armor sets periodically as you progress through the story.
Kratos can only change costumes by switching armor. Kratos has three armor pieces — Chest Armor, Waist Armor and Wrist Armor. Each piece changes his stats and the look of his character model. Companions can also equip upgrades, but only in the form of Accessories. Companions have three Accessory Slots automatically that can be changed in the Armor tab. These accessories provide no in-game cosmetic changes to your character model. They exist only to provide buffs. Accessories can also be upgraded at the blacksmith. Armor sets cannot be upgraded or purchased through Sindri or Brok’s shop.
