With July gone, now is the time to look back. What games are on the horizon? There were plenty of announcements made last month, and we’re compiling the best newly announced games of July 2022 below.
#10 MY HERO ULTRA RUMBLE
Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox X|S, Switch
If you’re ready to “go beyond”, then you’re in luck, because MY HERO ULTRA RUMBLE is on the way. Are you a fan of My Hero Academia? This is your dream come true.
This happens to be a battle royale game, but, it’s one with a twist. You’ll be playing along with 24 players who will be divided up into teams of three from characters across the city. Your goal? Be the last team standing. Do you have what it takes?
#9 SWORD ART ONLINE: Alicization Lycoris
Platforms: Switch
The Sword Art Online franchise is one of the more prolific franchises in the gaming world, and that’s no bull. SWORD ART ONLINE: Alicization Lycoris is the latest title and it promises to flesh out the story of the ever-expanding series even more.
In the game, Kirito finds himself in a virtual world that he doesn’t recognize, and yet, there’s something about it that feels familiar. He also meets someone that he doesn’t seem to know, and yet, there’s a promise held with them both that will change things. Filled with the same action and style as other Sword Art games, if you get this title, you’ll be in for a treat.
#8 Lollipop Chainsaw Remake
Platforms: TBA
Yep, she’s back! The over-the-top action game made by Suda 51 and James Gunn is going to be getting a full-on remake for those who want to enjoy it again, or those unfortunate few who didn’t get around to playing it the first time.
You’ll play as a young lady who happens to be from a family of zombie hunters. She also has the head of her boyfriend who is alive because of her magic. Why not when these two crazy guys are behind the story?
#7 Stuntfest – World Tour
Platforms: PC
Stuntfest – World Tour is a unique kind of racing game, mainly because in it you’ll be paired up against other players, and when you do, you’ll have to endure not just their antics, but the antics of the road itself in order to survive. Plus, there are various modes of races you’ll compete against one another in to further shine on the big stage.
But here’s the twist–if you’re to lose your vehicle, you can eject and fly high into the air and try to survive up there until you find another car to drive.
#6 Biomutant (PS5 & X/S)
Platforms: PS5, Xbox X|S
Without a doubt, Biomutant could be a very unique RPG when you finally get your hands on it. Featuring a story set in the animal kingdom, the title also tells a kung-fu story and has a genetics-altering gameplay loop. Players will be dealing with the problems of the Tree of Life. Various tribes are fighting over it, and it will be up to you to make things right and to keep the peace. You can alter your genetic code to make your character play how you want, so choose wisely.
#5 Sea of Stars
Platforms: PS5
Sea of Stars looks really special, not the least of which because of its visual style, the way it’s trying to harken back to the RPGs of old, and its unique gameplay. You’ll be in control of two unique characters who have the powers of the sun and moon, and only together can they fight off evil and do really special attacks. If you’re looking for a grand and deep and fun RPG experience, then you’ll definitely want to get Sea of Stars when it comes out next year.
#4 SCHiM
Platforms: PS4, PS5, Switch
If you’re looking for a mobile game, SCHiM might be for you. If you’re curious, the name is a reference to how in the game, a SCHiM is a soul and spirit from an object and it should NEVER be separated from its host. As you can guess, that happens right at the beginning of the game, and you must get back to your host. The problem is that you can only go from place to place in shadow, so you’ll need to hop from spot to spot in order to survive.
#3 Aliens
Platforms: PC, PS5, VR
While that title is vague, we don’t really know the true title just yet, but we do know it’s set within the Aliens movie universe. It might also be a VR title, meaning you’re going to get really up close and personal with the Xenomorphs. In the game, you’ll be playing as a colonial marine who has a big beef with the Xenomorphs and thus decides to go after them.
The game is meant to give “an authentic and immersive” experience, so one can only wonder what that’ll be like when it finally comes out.
#2 Soulframe
Platforms: PC
What is SoulFrame? Well, that’s still to be determined in some ways. But we do know that it comes from the creators of the hit title Warframe, and they want to deliver on something new and special for fans:
“With Soulframe’s worldbuilding and thematic elements, we are really looking to go back to our childhood favorites and pull inspiration from the elaborate fantasy worlds that we fell in love with growing up,” Soulframe Creative Director Geoff Crookes said in a press release. “Our team is really interested in this idea of nature and humanity colliding and we’ll be exploring a lot of those themes through our own lens while playing with ideas of restoration and exploration.”
#1 Kloa: Child of the Forest
Platforms: PC
The forest is dying, and what’s worse, those that live within it are being corrupted by a curse. If this continues, then nothing will endure. You are Kloa, a young girl who goes on a journey to try and stop the curse. You’ll guide her every step as she ventures across a beautifully rendered world in order to figure out what caused this curse, and how to undo it.
Explore the world, solve puzzles, and fight monsters with your katana or bow when this title releases next year.
Bonus Games
Kirby’s Dream Buffet
Platforms: Switch
This title was very much a surprise because it’s not just a new Kirby title, it’s one that’ll only be available on the eShop. This is mainly just a game about Kirby getting to eat, so you likely won’t be playing this unless you want a really relaxing title to enjoy. But that’s the joy of Kirby–sometimes you get a deep game, and sometimes you just get some relaxing fun.
Kona II: Brume
Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox X|S, Switch
In this game, you’ll play as a detective who is once again trapped in the great white north in order to solve the mystery of a place known as Kona. A unique mist has cut off a mining town from the rest of the world, and you must venture into the surrounding areas to learn the truth. Be mindful–you’re not alone in this part of the world. So find the survivors, hear their accounts of what led to the brume forming, and see if you can survive.
Yet Another Fantasy Title
Platforms: PC
This is a title that pokes fun at the fantasy genre while also being a deep experience in and of itself.
You play as a rogue, one who (by the game’s own admittance) is usually killed by a “main character.” But this time, you get to kill them, take their unicorn, and accidentally become the chosen one who is tasked with taking down a dragon. Yay?
