After a new science fiction game? We have quite a few to get excited over this year. In addition, there are plenty of thrilling video game releases throughout 2022. In this list, we will highlight a few games we think you should keep tabs on throughout this year. Of course, you might want to check back regularly as we’ll continue to update this list. With that said, we’re sticking to games that are slated to release this year so games like Perfect Dark which is slated for a release in 2023, are not included.

A dystopian survival horror game that draws influence from PS1 era classic titles, Signalis channels all of those with a range of modern acroutements that makes the game oh so appealing in 2022. Nightmarish threats, a few quirky puzzles and a constant sense of dread, make Signalis one of the most engaging and mentally challenging games of the year.

The geniuses/sick minds behind the likes of Rick & Morty, and Trover Saves The World, have brought us the equally sick/genius High On Life. As a shooter, the game is pretty basic, but the sci-fi world of High On Life, combined with the incredible sense of humour that really only comes from Justin Roiland and his team gives this game an edge over so many others in the space.

There are many space games out there to enjoy, but Cosmoteer: Starship Architect & Commander is one of the few to let you have complete control over your ship and how it looks from the beginning.
You’ll have the ability to craft the ship of your dreams. But be warned! You must be sure to construct it well, or it’ll be easy to destroy later on. Once you’ve made your vessel, take notice of your crew and ensure they’re good to go for the journey across space.

Dome Keeper is a unique twist on the tower defense and exploration genres. The game is self-explanatory. You are part of a dome. One that is constantly attacked by enemy forces. Your job is outfitting your dome with weapons to fight the waves. Then, once you’re done with a wave, you’ll dive into the ground below to search for materials. These include special powerful artifacts that can help you fight off the next wave! But be warned, you’ll be on a clock and must make it back to the dome before the next attack comes! Will you be able to keep your dome safe?
#13 Somerville

If you enjoy games like Inside and Limbo, then Somerville is something to keep tabs on. This is a game that’s actually co-founded by the co-founder of Playdead, Dino Patti, so it would make sense that the game looks a bit like those titles. In this game, you’ll find it’s another third-person adventure platformer. From what we know so far about the game, players are taking control of a family as they attempt to make their way through a new harsh world that’s been invaded by aliens. Similar to the games mentioned above, this title also lacks dialogue. The story is told through playing the game and interpretations from players.
#12 Dying Light 2 Stay Human

Dying Light 2 only came out earlier this year but it is already a contender for game of the year by all counts, especially the cooperative play. The game is open world and makes sure that you take advantage of your parkour and crafting skills but this time, with up to four players by your side. The game also encourages multiple playthroughs as certain areas within the game are only accessible according to your decisions. Maybe the game will receive an overhaul similar to its predecessor with The Following that’ll make the game even more incredible than it already is.
#11 Terra Invicta

What would the Earth do when an alien force approaches the planet? Many sci-fi movies have asked that question. In Terra Invicta, you’ll take a more strategic approach to it, though your results will depend on who you side with. In the game, the Earth is under threat from an alien force, but when the planet as a whole can’t unite, certain factions will do the deciding for them. These factions will vary in their goals and armament, so pick the one you think is best and have at it. Investigate the aliens based on a probe that came to Earth and try to determine intentions. Then, build up your forces and prepare for what is coming.

Prodeus is a title for those who want to feel like they’re playing an old-school boomer shooter while still experiencing the modern day’s nice modern graphics and effects. That was one of the team’s goals, to make you think you were playing an old-school title but with new-school flair. Like those titles of the past, you’ll go through a complex full of monsters and need to wipe them out. Luckily for you, an assortment of over-the-top weapons is waiting for you to wield. You’ll have fun using them; we guarantee it. After you’re done with the main game, check out what the community has done via their custom levels!

If you’re looking for new free-to-play titles to play as we get closer to the end of the year, then Shatterline might be one to try out. Frag Labs made the game. The team has been working on this FPS roguelike title for five years now. They’ve undergone multiple challenges to try and make this game fun, even losing their publisher at one point. But they persevered and that’s enough for you to at least give it a shot. There are eight different operators to choose from in the game. Then, you can pick and choose what weapons to give them to fit your playstyle.

Now here’s a game many of you remember because you got to play as a cat! That was the whole game; you were a cat.
Ok, not really; you were a cat in a dystopian future where robots were in place of humans, and you had to get back to your own cat family. But most of the game was you being a cat and doing cat-like things, which was awesome! You climbed around, broke almost everything in sight, and had fun with the nearby robots. Oh, and you could meow anytime you wanted.
There were even speed runs of this game to see how quickly you could make it through the world.
#7 Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed

Humanity had a great run, but sometimes it needs someone to come down and terrorize them. Oh, and possibly probe them for the heck of it. Enter Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed! In this game, you’ll play as a familiar foul-mouthed alien who is tired of humanity after they kill his leader. Yeah, they’re going to pay for that. Barrel through towns full of humans using various alien weaponry to show the humans whose boss. Hint: It’s you. The game is meant to invoke one of the “golden ages” of the United States while also playing up the “alien scare.” So go forth and show them they absolutely should be afraid of aliens.

How hungry are you? Are you so hungry that you’d devour the underworld’s denizens so you can live a natural life again? If so, then Dungeons Munchies is for you. You play as someone who ends up in an “underground complex” and must make it through by eating monsters. What does that do? The more you cook and eat, the more abilities you get. The game’s hook is for you to hunt down monsters and cook them up so you can see what new skills you can get after munching on them. Different abilities affect your playstyle. So you could be a sword-wielder one meal and then throw projectiles the next!

#5 Elex II

If you enjoyed Elex, another game is coming out for the franchise. Elex II puts your back into the role of Jax. This time in the action RPG players will find a new hostile invasion hitting the planet, and Jax will have to seek out all the factions. You’ll need to convince the factions to join together if you wish to stand a chance in fighting against this new force. With that said, your actions and choices could actually result in some NPCs leaving your group or even getting killed off. So you’ll really want to think carefully throughout the campaign. Fortunately, you don’t have to play the original Elex title to enjoy this upcoming installment. Of course, it might help if you want to know more about the lore and characters.
#4 Overprime

If you’re after a new MOBA game, then you can check into Overprime. This is a 3D third-person shooter that has players picking through a collection of heroes. Just like a typical MOBA experience, the game is won through strategy and skillful combat. You’ll press forward, fighting off enemy heroes and taking down their defenses. Ultimately, you’ll have to fight through and reach their base in order to destroy it and win the round. Of course, we can expect new heroes to regularly come into the game to keep the gameplay feeling a bit fresh. With that said, we don’t have a release date attached to the game quite yet. Still, if you’re finding the MOBA genre needing a bit more competition, this might be a game well worth picking up later this year.
#3 Ghostwire: Tokyo

Ghostwire: Tokyo is coming from Tango Gameworks. Their only works released at the moment are The Evil Within series. With that said, you won’t find this game to be a survival horror experience. Instead, it’s more of an action-horror game, so you can expect some spooky elements throughout the action-packed gameplay. We’re thrown into Tokyo in this game, in which a strange fog has invaded the area. Humanity has vanished and in their place are different spirits. You’ll find our protagonist manages to survive this new attack but is fused with a spirit himself. With your newfound partner, you’re given new abilities and attacks. Seemingly the last human out there, you’ll have to fight off these ghosts and cleanse Tokyo in hopes of uncovering what happened and how to restore order.
#2 The Callisto Protocol

The Callisto Protocol is a game coming out from Striking Distance Studios and is directed by Glen Schofield. This is the developer behind the Dead Space franchise. There are quite a bit of comparison posts being made already between the two franchises already. Players will find that The Callisto Protocol is set years into the future and within the same universe as PUBG: Battlegrounds. We haven’t seen a ton about this game quite yet, but from the trailer footage released so far, it looks like we’re taking the role of a prisoner. Our protagonist is being transported into Black Iron, a facility within Callisto, Jupiter’s moon. However, you soon find that a hostile alien parasitic beast invades the ship upon arrival.
#1 Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Zero Dawn finally has a sequel. Horizon Forbidden Wet is putting players right back into the role of Aloy. This time around, Aloy discovers a new strange plague has spread across the lands. All living life in its pathway is destroyed, and if nothing is done soon, the entire world could be in danger. Players will have to venture to the west coast in hopes of uncovering the source of the plague to stop it from further spreading. However, it’s a dangerous and unknown trek for Aloy to make. Players will explore new areas throughout the game, battle different mechanical beasts, and even contact different hostile tribes.
