#3. Megalixirs [Final Fantasy Series]
The original item we all save for a rainy day. The rare Megalixir fully restores party HP and MP in almost every single Final Fantasy game. Usually, there’s no easy way to purchase these all-powerful items, so you’ll have to stick with the rare ones you’ll find in the environment. Sometimes you can steal them. Sometimes they can be farmed. But they’re always hard to get, and scarcity makes the last items we want to use during a big boss fight. Even if it means we’ll bite the big one.
Infamously, players could refine x100 Megalixirs from Bahamut in Final Fantasy 8. Even with that overabundance of useful items, we still didn’t use them — but Final Fantasy 8 is a game that’s so easily broken, maybe that’s an exception to the rule.
Maybe we should loosen up and just start drinking down those Megalixirs when we need them instead of slowly healing (and dropping ethers) on everyone in our party. But… what if we need it?
#4. Victory Torpedo [Wonderful 101]
The developers at Platinum Games can be downright cruel. They make some pretty tricky games like the Bayonetta series, and the recently re-released Wonderful 101. These games all include shops where you can buy extra healing items — and in the Wonderful 101, you can buy screen-clearing super-powered torpedoes to nuke your foes. It all sounds great. A must-have item to put in your super-powered pocket.
But we’re not going to ever use the Victory Torpedo. It deals massive damage to bosses, but it also kills your score. Every level, you’re rated by your performance. Using powerful items like the Victory Torpedo or even basic healing items can sink your high score instead, meaning you’ll earn less money for those really valuable upgrades. It’s truly criminal to dangle items like this in front of our faces, and then tell us we absolutely must not use them. That’s just how Platinum Games rolls.
These are the items we could do without. Find more on the next page.
