There was a ton of great games released for the PlayStation 4 and while the focus is being moved to the next-generation video game console platforms, it doesn’t mean that we won’t see any big-name titles releasing for the console. In fact, with the slew of delays that happened in 2020 due to the coronavirus, we expect 2021 to be packed with all kinds of great video game title releases. Check out some of our most anticipated PlayStation 4 games slated to launch in 2020. However, you will want to bookmark this page as it will continue to get updated as more games are unveiled.
#10 Skull & Bones
- Developer: Ubisoft
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
- Release: TBA
- Co-op: Online
- Competitive Multiplayer: Online
Skull & Bones was first unveiled to the masses during E3 2017, but this game is having a hard time getting out of development. We were originally told this was a pirate-based game that had players controlling ships and taking on battles to gain loot. There would be the ability to customize different aspects of the ship and crew as well. However, there wasn’t much showcased since and it looks like the last update unveiled that the game was pushed out of its 2020 release window. We may see a new vision for this game as well, but details as to just how Skull & Bones is changing has yet to be revealed.
#9 Outriders
- Developer: People Can Fly
- Publisher: Square Enix
- Platforms: PC, XBO, PS4
- Release: 2021
- Co-op: Online
- Competitive Multiplayer: TBA
A new FPS from the developers People Can Fly, who you may be familiar with from Bulletstorm and Gears Judgement, is in the works. Known as Outriders, this is an FPS that features cooperative gameplay with players being able to freely drop in and out at any given time. Not too much information has been released about the game so far, instead, we’re told that more details of what to expect will come before 2021 actually gets here.
With that said, from the announcement trailer, we know that this game features an odd hostile world where players are gunning through creatures to reach an energy source. People Can Fly has a pretty solid track record with FPS and as a result, we have some pretty high expectations for this upcoming game. So far the gameplay footage looks a bit similar to the likes of Destiny where players will head into an area and fight off a slew of enemies before moving on.
#8 Kena: Bridge of Spirits
- Developer: Ember Lab
- Publisher: Ember Lab
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5
- Release: 2021
- Co-op: N/A
- Competitive Multiplayer: N/A
Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a game that really can catch people’s attention purely from an aesthetic point. From what we know so far about the game is that players take control of a young protagonist named Kena, who is a spirit guide. Within the game, Kena is tasked with helping trapped spirits move on from the physical realm, but it’s a journey filled with hostile obstacles along the way. Through the use of her magical abilities and willpower, Kena will see that every spirit she comes across will find the closure needed.
Players will find that this is a third-person action game. Kena will be using not only her magical abilities but her staff and even a bow to fight against enemies. From what we can tell, it looks like as Kena fights off enemy hostiles, she’ll also restore the lands that surround the area. So for instance, you’ll find Kena fighting off an enemy in a dead brush but upon defeating an enemy, the area will return to a lively forest once again.
#7 Dying Light 2
- Developer: Techland
- Publisher: Techland
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
- Release: 2021
- Co-op: Online
- Competitive Multiplayer: TBA
Dying Light is receiving a sequel in 2020. Known simply as Dying Light 2, players will take on the role of a new protagonist named Aiden Caldwell, another individual who is skilled in parkour. Set in possibly the last humanity sanctuary from the mindless zombies that inhabit the world, Aiden will not only have a large urban open world to explore, but a few factions within it to deal with. A big push this time around from the development team is to provide gamers with plenty of choices and consequences, specifically dealing with the factions and their motives within the city.
Because there is such a big emphasis on choices and consequences this time around, there will be some motive to go back and replay the game. For instance, certain choices could leave areas of the city to be closed off leaving that storyline or potential new quests that deal with the area to be no longer available for your campaign.
#6 Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2
- Developer: Hardsuit Labs
- Publisher: Paradox Interactive
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
- Release: 2021
- Co-op: N/A
- Competitive Multiplayer: N/A
Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines originally launched into the market in 2004 and while the game had generally positive reviews, there wasn’t much of a following. That has since changed as the title continued to grow into quite the cult hit. After a decade has passed, a sequel to the title is finally making its way into the market this year.
This is still very much an action-RPG where the game focuses on players selecting dialogue options, tweaking their character’s skill tree, along going through the game in their own playstyle. Overall, the game puts players into the role of a human that was attacked during the Mass Embrace, a day in which rouge vampires have selected several humans to attack. With the vampire groups of the city in discord, there is plenty of questions left unanswered. Luckily, now a new vampire into the scene, you will be the one to figure out what’s going on after forcefully tossed into the middle of the chaos.
#5 Hogwarts Legacy
- Developer: Avalanche Software
- Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, XSX/S
- Release: 2021
- Co-op: N/A
- Competitive Multiplayer: N/A
For a few years now there’s been rumors of a Harry Potter RPG title being in the works. Now after going through these different rumors and supposed leaks, we finally received the confirmation through a PlayStation 5 based event in September of 2020. The video game will be taking place in the Harry Potter universe, but years before the events of the narrative or cinematic series. In this game, players will be taking the role of a student at Hogwarts during the 1800s. It’s discovered that there is a powerful ancient magic that is held within the player’s character. Just how you handle that magic either for good or evil seems to be up to the player.
We haven’t seen too much of this game at the time of writing this description, but it looks like it will be an open-world RPG. Players can likely make some upgrades and adjustments to their character’s stats. Meanwhile, you’ll likely explore familiar areas, tame magical creatures, and of course battle against all sorts of hostile foes. We can expect this game to be a cross-generational title when it launches in 2021.
#4 Gotham Knights
- Developer: WB Games Montreal
- Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, XSX/S
- Release: 2021
- Co-op: Online
- Competitive Multiplayer: N/A
Fans really enjoyed the Arkham games, but it’s been a while since the Dark Knight has graced his appearance in the video game medium. Now a new game based around the Dark Knight franchise is coming out called Gotham Knights. Unfortunately, those of you who wanted to put criminals behind bars as the caped crusader will be a letdown. Instead, in this game, it looks like Bruce Wayne has perished but as a safety measure, a final video message was sent out to his fellow Bat-family. This message alerts Robin, Bat Girl, Nightwing, and Red Hood, that it’s up to them to keep Gotham safe, especially now that criminals will scheme to take the city over after the passing of Batman.
This is an action RPG where players can take the role of these iconic characters as they fight against waves of enemies. It’s even co-op friendly where a secondary player can freely drop into the game on the fly. We know that this narrative will be new so don’t go in expecting any former storylines from the comic books, animated series, or movies to be retold. However, it does look like the Court of Owls will be making their video game debut, after first getting their start into the Batman New 52 comic book series.
#3 Elden Ring
- Developer: FromSoftware
- Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
- Release: TBA
- Co-op: N/A
- Competitive Multiplayer: N/A
FromSoftware has been around for years but fans really took towards their Souls series. After the success of Demon’s Souls, the franchise continued on with fans craving more difficult gameplay and dark lore. While we haven’t received another Souls installment in a few years, there is another game that Souls fans may be interested in which is Elden Ring. This is a new IP under FromSoftware that will likely have that same difficult action RPG gameplay.
Unfortunately, at the time of writing this video game description, not much information has been shared online about Elden Ring. It’s been a secret project with only a teaser indicating that the title is in development. Still, we do know that the developers are wanting to add some unique attributes to the game that we haven’t seen before. One of those attributes has been mentioned in the past which is mounts. Outside of that, we know that author George R.R. Martin, the creator behind the series called A Song of Ice and Fire, better known for its HBO adaptation, Game of Thrones, has joined in on the project to bring out more lore for this in-game world.
#2 Far Cry 6
- Developer: Ubisoft
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Platforms: Luna, PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, XSX/S
- Release: TBA
- Co-op: TBA
- Competitive Multiplayer: TBA
The Far Cry franchise has a massive following and Ubisoft is preparing to launch Far Cry 6 into the marketplace. This time around, players are going to dive into a fictional Caribbean island called Yara which is in the middle of civil war. The country is barely holding on by a thread after a strict regime is attempting to keep what it views as unruly civilians in check. Lead by tyrant Anton Castillo, this president is showing how the world can be shaped only by force to his son, Diego. Meanwhile, players take the role of a guerilla fighter named Dani Rojas who is attempting to overthrow the regime and bring back the nation into a peaceful state.
This is still a first-person shooter and it’s going to be one of the largest maps featured in a Far Cry game. We haven’t received too much information about the setting or map quite yet. With that said, there are bound to be plenty of areas to explore, NPCs to meet, quests, loot, and of course, a diverse set of vehicles to explore the island.
#1 Horizon Forbidden West
- Developer: Guerrilla Games
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Platforms: PS4, PS5
- Release: 2021
- Co-op: N/A
- Competitive Multiplayer: N/A
One of the more popular exclusive games from the PlayStation 4 library is Horizon Zero Dawn, a title that followed a young warrior attempting to gain insight as to who her mother is and how she became an outcast from the tribe as a baby. Set in a future world where mankind has fallen and large mechanical beasts roam freely, Horizon Zero Dawn really offered a unique storyline to take on. While that game has gone on to be available for both PC and PlayStation 4, so far the sequel is only slated to be available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. We’re once again thrown back into the role of Aloy but this time around, a new threat may change the world completely.
A strange plague has hit the world and it’s quickly killing off all life. If humanity wishes to survive, they will need to track down the source of this virus and remove it completely. This virus will take players to the pacific coast but along the way, Aloy will be facing off against new mechanical beasts and hostile tribes that have claimed the land as their own.
Bonus Games
WiLD
- Developer: Wild Sheep Studio
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Platforms: PS4
- Release: TBA
- Co-op: TBA
- Competitive Multiplayer: TBA
We don’t blame you if you forgot about WiLD. It’s a game that was first announced back in 2014 during Gamescom as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. However, the development studio has been in limbo when it comes to the game. Stuck in development hell, it’s uncertain if this game would ever release into the market. However, a new trademark was filed by Sony in 2019 so this game is not cancelled and we could finally see it launch in 2021.
Within WiLD, players take on the role of a human during the Neolithic period. You have the power to control any animal which will help aid you during your battles against other humans and tribes set in the world. There haven’t been any updates on this game for a good while so the development team may have added some new elements to the title. For instance, we know that there would be some multiplayer element into the game but we’re waiting to see just how it will play out along with some updated footage.
