11 Incredible Secrets You Can Find Right At The Start Of Video Games

August 18, 2020 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Games like to slap secrets where you least expect them. Here’s 11 of our favorite early secrets.

Finding The Secret Room [Gone Home]

Like The Witness, Gone Home can be completed in a matter of minutes if you know exactly what to do. You’ll spend hours exploring the house of Gone Home, discovering secret passages and notes. Eventually, all that exploration reveals the hidden location of the attic key. If you really know what to do, this game can be completed in less than a minute.

What’s the secret? There’s a hidden room to the right of the main stairs. Just interact with the wall to get inside, grab the attic key, and you’re on your way to the ending credits.

Why would you want to complete the game fast? There’s an achievement for it, duh.

Discovering The Hardest Difficulty [Quake]

Quake has a novel way for selecting difficulty. Instead of picking your difficulty on a menu, you get visual in-game representations. There are three paths — but if you’re aiming to play on the hardest difficulty, Nightmare, you’ll need to find a secret.

The highest difficulty is found in the Episode Select room. Entering Episode 4, you can jump into the water and dive down to find the hidden Nightmare Difficulty portal. This is one of the coolest methods I’ve seen for selecting difficulty — and one of the most fun for inquisitive players looking for secrets.
