#4 Death Stranding
Platforms: PS4, PC
Death Stranding has a few things going for it before there was any trailers or premise. The reason so many people tuned into this game right from the start was because of the person behind the game development. Hideo Kojima is a world-renown video game developer and he’s delivered some incredible works before. With a massive fan base, the developer was known for delivering video games from Konami but that shifted rather quickly. After alerting the world that he was working on the much-beloved Silent Hill IP from Konami where it would use an impressive engine known as the Fox Engine, there was a falling out. Not a lot of information came out from the company and Kojima, but ultimately it allowed the developer to start his development studio.
Working with several members previously attached to Konami, Hideo Kojima opened up Kojima Productions with their debut title being Death Stranding. It’s a game set in a world mainly set apart after a supernatural event and just like with any Hideo Kojima video game, the story can be a bit much to digest. Still, players essentially play a role in connecting the world and delivering goods which is difficult in the environment we’re set within. A lot of the game is a bit of a slow burn, as you take in the sights, prepare your journey, and carefully maneuver through the terrain. Chances are you already played this game if you own a PlayStation 4, but PC gamers will soon have the chance to dive into the title as well.
#3 Doom Eternal
Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
The Doom reboot from id Software was an incredible hit. There is a big fan base both from veterans who enjoyed the original game to newcomers that are just now diving into Doom for the first time. It was a simple game narrative too as the title throws you into a badass space marine that has to take out a swarm of demonic creatures on Mars. Again, we’re refraining from spoiling too much of game narratives here, but Doom Eternal takes place a bit after the first game so if you haven’t played the 2016 Doom reboot then maybe skip ahead.
In Doom Eternal, hell has invaded Earth and humanity has come face-to-face with demonic entities that are now ruling Earth. As a result, our favorite Doom Slayer is set off to once again save humanity and get rid of these demons once and for all. The mixture of cities in ruins with a hellish overlay makes for quite the setpiece and the gameplay is still just as fun as we remembered it. While you’re still able to blow demons away with massive guns, some new tweaks expand your arsenal. Furthermore, a new feature allows players to visibly see when demons are taking damage which you can then judge just how many more shots an enemy can take before their HP depletes. It’s nice little details like that which adds quite a bit to the gameplay experience.
