#5 Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn is a big exclusive on the PlayStation 4 but it was recently announced that the game would see a release on the PC platform as well. This game follows an interesting narrative in which it takes place after a post-apocalyptic pandemic. Not much is known of the world before humanities fall, but something happened that set humankind back and now the once-thriving cities are just shells of an old society. Instead, players will find small tribes that gather and hunt down resources all while believing in what is now ancient rituals. Humans are not even the top of the food chain any longer, with the world now freely being dominated by these massive machines.
It’s a dangerous world to explore in this third-person action game where we step into the shoes of a young woman named Aloy. Forced into exile as a baby, one man has taken the child in and guided her into her young adult years where her journey is finally opened up with a chance to be accepted back in by the tribe that kicked her out like a newborn. With that said, Aloy will have to put everything she has into surviving the harsh world and making use of old technology that has been deemed unruly by her guardian.
Being an open world with a strong narrative journey, this is a game that has been instantly recommended as not only a great science fiction title but a console exclusive that is by far one of the first few games you should pick up if you’re just getting into the console platform.
#4 Titanfall 2
Respawn Entertainment has developed several IP hits. With the likes of Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the studio first got its start with the release of Titanfall. This was a game released exclusives for the PC and Xbox consoles back in 2014 while also being just a multiplayer game that mixes mechs with foot soldiers. The result was a massive multiplayer hit but it wasn’t enough for fans and they expressed their desire over a single-player campaign if a sequel was ever released. Well, Respawn Entertainment listened and they opted to bring out a sequel that not only featured multiplayer game modes but a single-player campaign.
The single-player campaign for Titanfall 2 is nothing too in-depth and even then there are some expectations that you are familiar with the IP in regards to the first installment. Despite this, there is still a fun short campaign that fans can enjoy that will only take about six hours to complete so don’t expect anything too long. Still, the game really shines with the multiplayer game mode with players going to battle with these massive mechs, custom loadouts, and even game modes that will be diverse enough to keep players going through the game a good while before moving on. This installment also released back in 2017 and a third installment is likely going to release sooner rather than later. Until then, you can pick up Titanfall 2 right now on the PS4.
#3 Doom
The Doom franchise has been around since the 1990s and it blew up in popularity. Fans couldn’t get enough of being a space marine and demolishing countless demons that came across your path. While there have been several installments to the Doom franchise, the game series recently had a massive reboot. Known as Doom, most refer to the reboot as Doom 2016. This game follows pretty much the same storyline as the first title, though a bit more in-depth than what we originally received back when the game first launched.
Overall, the game follows a space marine on a base within Mars. A group of scientists accidentally opens up a portal to hell, unleashing demons into the realm, and it’s up to Doom Guy to demolish the demons. It’s a fast-paced action game where you’ll slice, smash through, and light up a variety of demons using an array of weapons. The game is incredibly satisfying and we would be amiss if we don’t at least mention that there was a sequel released into the market known as Doom Eternal.
Doom Eternal takes place after the events of Doom where demons have invaded Earth. The development studio not only kept the overall same gameplay and mechanics from the reboot, but they also added onto the foundation created.
There are more weapons, demons, and also a means of traversing the world such as a boost to even a grappling system. Even the narrative was tweaked up a bit, giving players more to chew through as your progress the campaign.
#2 Detroit: Become Human
Detroit: Become Human, at the time of writing this video game description, is the latest video game released into the market from the development studio Quantic Dream. In this game, players are taken into the future in which the world is heavily reliant on androids that appear similar to humans while the game narrative follows a story revolving around just a few androids. If you ever played a Quantic Dream game, you know they are mainly based around stories as well such as Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls.
Likewise, the game development studio has the same overall setup to the gameplay mechanics. It’s all about exploring the area, QTE’s, and dialogue choices. As you progress through the game, the choices you make will alter the narrative, and even situations that will occur later on. As a result, fans will want to replay the game a few times to see just how the story would have changed if they selected certain options through the campaign.
Speaking of the narrative, we won’t spoil you but there are a few different key characters that you’ll follow such as an android who has started a rebellion, another that is an escapee along with an android tasked in tracking down deviant androids.
#1 Nier: Automata
Chances are you may have played this game and if not you are really missing out. Nier: Automata was an instant hit when it launched and it’s one game that consistently gets put on several lists whether it be just a general best of the PlayStation 4 or even diving into more niche categories like sci-fi. At any rate, this is a futuristic setting where the game follows a world missing of human life. With humans having to flee Earth after a robotic attack, society is hoping that they are able to regain their home planet through the use of highly skilled and developed androids. You take the role of a combat android sent to Earth in order to fight in this proxy war.
Combat is a big part of the game and luckily it’s incredibly satisfying. This semi-open world RPG feels a bit like Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. You’ll have a mixture of heavy and light attacks to use against the enemy and there are even some shump elements to the game after being tossed into an aircraft. With that said, there are still RPG elements to the title and that means making upgrades on your weapons along with the android itself. Likewise, there’s a nice little contained tale that will keep you moving forward and wanting to see what happens next.
Bonus
Warframe
Oftentimes Warframe is considered to be a Destiny clone but one that has really provided fans with plenty of content and enjoyment for several years now. It released back in 2013 and since then there have been new updates and expansions to offer more storylines, content, and in-game items. Overall, the game follows a futuristic race known as Tenno which are bounded to be a warrior. You awaken from a deep slumber when a new force has become to wreak havoc leaving causing the Tenno to once again rise up and fight.
As mentioned, this game feels very much like a Destiny style video game. Players can work together on different missions or go solo. It’s also very much focused on customization options giving you the ability to make your Tenno play and react towards your particular playstyle. If you want to play as a stealthy ninja or if you rather build a tank character, it’s all readily available for you in this game.
