#5 Super Mario Maker 2
- Developer: Nintendo
- Publisher: Nintendo
The last generation with the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS, we got a new unique Super Mario game. If you ever thought you could create a level based on one of the classic Mario titles then you got the tools to do so with Super Mario Maker. This game was Nintendo offering a means to allow players in completely creating their own unique Super Mario levels from both visuals to the block placements and enemies. It was a massive hit and now for the Nintendo Switch platform, we got a sequel. Super Mario Maker 2 brings everything that we loved in the first installment but further expands on the mechanic’s, tools and even game modes.
While the game has a campaign for players to go through, the main focus of this game is to build your own unique levels. Players can use assets that come from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Super Mario 3D World. This game has brought out some incredible levels both in complexity to the story they tell. Even if you don’t want to create your levels, you can play countless levels from others online.
#4 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Developer: Nintendo EAD
- Publisher: Nintendo
Oh, man, could this be a potentially controversial title? We made mentioned earlier in this post that we’re sticking with exclusives and if you’re familiar with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, then you know that this game, for the most part, was available on the Nintendo Wii U. However, leaving this game out would likely lead to plenty of comments asking why this title wasn’t on the list, to begin with. We’re going to add it in because it’s an edition that you can only get on the Nintendo Switch. Is that fair? If not feel free to let me know in the comments.
Much like Tetris, everyone knows about Mario Kart, it’s such a massive franchise. This game can easily break friendships as Nintendo perfected kart racers. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe brings in a nice selection of characters, customization options for your kart, a slew of race tracks both new and old, along with a variety of game modes to keep players enjoying the title for hours on end. Honestly, if you’re not a big fan of racing video game titles and by chance never played a Mario Kart title then do yourself a favor and pick this game up.
#3 Super Smash Bros Ultimate
- Developer: Bandai Namco Games
- Publisher: Nintendo
We all knew the Nintendo Switch was going to receive a Super Smash Bros video game title and back in 2018 it was unveiled that the game would be called Super Smash Bros Ultimate. What a perfect title to give this game as it’s packed to the brim with characters. Nintendo brought back every character that it ever introduced to the franchise along with a few new fighters.
This is still the same Super Smash Bros experience that we’ve seen since the Nintendo 64. Players take on the role of a gaming character and use their particular abilities to fight against opposing players. Of course, there are a ton of different game themed stages to pick from and as always, there are a number of items the game will throw down to give a player an advantage.
Furthermore, there is a campaign mode which players are tossed on a quest to recover the fighter roster. It’s simplistic but in the grand scheme of things, it offers players something of interest to go through in order to unlock new playable characters.
#2 Super Mario Odyssey
- Developer: Nintendo
- Publisher: Nintendo
What’s a Nintendo console release without Mario. For a while now there have been plenty of fans waiting for that next big Mario experience like how Super Mario 64 provided. That wait came to an end easily after the new and whimsical video game Super Mario Odyssey was introduced. This was another brand new 3D open world style Super Mario video game that took players to a wide range of worlds all with their own unique obstacle and challenges.
The story remains the same, players are once again fighting against Bowser after he kidnaps Princess Peach. However, aiding you along the way is a brand new character known as Cappy. Cappy is the hat Mario sports throughout the game but this character could be used as a weapon when thrown at the enemy. Furthermore, practically everything could be taken control of when Mario throws Cappy at a particualr interest. From there, players can become something like a Goomba to a giant T-Rex. We highly recommend giving Super Mario Odyssey a go as its not only a fantastic game but easily a system seller on its own
#1 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Developer: Nintendo EPD
- Publisher: Nintendo
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild marks as the nineteenth main installment to The Legend of Zelda franchise. It’s a game that did release on the Nintendo Wii U, but we figured that it would be amiss if we didn’t include it on the list. This time around, players will be placed in a large open-world environment with the ability to play through the game’s dungeons in any order or freely explore wherever you please.
Within The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, players will take on the role of Link after he awakens from a deep slumber that lasted a hundred years. A mysterious voice alerts link to reach a ruined Kingdom known as Hyrule where he will learn of Calamity Ganon, the antagonist who had previously destroyed Hyrule, though, during the process, he had trapped himself within the Kingdom. Ultimately, Link will have to train and prepare for a battle against Calamity Ganon before he escapes and destroys the world.
This game quickly became a mega-hit and for a lot of gamers out there it became their most cherished Zelda title to date. It’s going to be hard for Nintendo to top this particular installment and it’s easily a game that makes the Nintendo Switch worth purchasing if you don’t already own a unit.
Bonus
Kirby Star Allies
- Developer: Good-Feel
- Publisher: Nintendo
Kirby Star Allies will have players taking the role of Kirby with the ability to throw stars at enemies to essentially turn them into Kirby’s allies as the big component this time around. Outside of that, you can still expect the same traditional move set from past Kirby titles such as inhale, star spit, slide attack, air-gun, among others. When it comes to the story players will have to take control of Kirby as he embarks on a journey to rid a curse that has spread across the world, possessing all of Kirby’s friends.
Now it’s not the best Kirby title we’ve ever come across in the franchise. But for what is available on the Nintendo Switch, this is a game that should be appealing to put in the time to complete the game. This is a 2018 video game release so it’s not going to run players the full $60 price tag that it came with.
