The Best Single Player Video Games Of This Generation So Far

August 5, 2020 by Dennis Patrick

Lose yourself in these incredible single player games for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

#30 Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
  • Developer: Ubisoft
  • Publisher: Ubisoft

Mario and the Rabbids franchises have collided with the release of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Developed under Ubisoft, Mario and his new team of Rabbids are against Bowser and his clan. This is a turn-based tactical RPG which is a bit different then majority of the Mario games we’re used to playing. There is even a Donkey Kong themed expansion available if you end up enjoying the base game.

#29 Life is Strange
  • Developer: Dontnod Entertainment
  • Publisher: Square Enix

Life is Strange is one of those games that at first glance doesn’t seem to be something that would have such a deep narrative. But when you give it a try, you’ll have a terrible time when it comes to setting the controller down. There are so many elements to the narrative and journey Dontnod Entertainment takes you that it’s easily a great title recommendation for those that want a deeper story or to those that might not be extremely skilled when it comes to gaming.

Within the game, players take the role of a young adult named Max who is in her senior year of high school after she was accepted into a prestigious academy featuring a desirable photography course. This school actually takes Max back to her hometown of Arcadia Bay, Oregon and it’s with her return that she stumbles upon her past best Friend, Chloe.

Years have passed since Max left with her parents and their friendship slowly chipped away into nothing more than acquaintances. However, one day Max discovers she has a supernatural ability to reverse time and through it, she is able to rekindle her friendship with Chloe. But with all that said, there is something deeper that resides in Arcadia Bay and this game definitely doesn’t hold back.

You’ll learn of deep dark secrets the town has kept hidden along with morally tough and emotional choices that will alter the narrative. This is an episodic video game and with the entire season available, we highly recommend playing the game. Gameplay is aimed more towards puzzle solving and exploring which makes it easy for anyone to pick up and play.

#28 Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Developer: Rockstar Studios
  • Publisher: Rockstar Games

Rockstar Games has crafted up a number of incredible pieces of work. Their beloved long-running series Grand Theft Auto, the single IP release of Bully, and of course their old western series, Red Dead Redemption just to name a few. Red Dead Redemption has a massive following and gamers all over the world have been waiting for a new installment.

Within Red Dead Redemption 2 players take the role of Arthur Morgan who finds himself on the run from the law with his fellow members of the Van der Linde gang. Outside of being another western adventure full of gun battles and forming your protagonist as a law abiding citizen or morally corrupt outlaw, the game also sets players on a massive open world. This open world environment will also feature a variety of landscapes, wildlife and interesting characters.

#27 Resident Evil 7
  • Developer: Capcom
  • Publisher: Capcom

Resident Evil 7 takes place four years after the events of Resident Evil 6, in a fictional city of Dulvey, Louisiana. Players will be taking on the role of Ethan, a man who is searching for his missing wife where his investigation leads him to a derelict plantation mansion that houses the oddity Baker family.

It seems that Ethan will have to escape from the cannibalistic Baker family while also searching for clues as to why his journey took him to the Baker family. The overall game does see some changes from the norm in the franchise such as putting players in a first-person perspective. Furthermore, the game takes a step back to the early years of Resident Evil with a focus on survival horror elements rather than action based horror. After players complete the main campaign of Resident Evil 7 they can move on and enjoy the narrative DLC which does help flesh out the story along with tying up some of the loose ends from the narrative ending.

#26 Wolfenstein: The New Colossus
  • Developer: MachineGames
  • Publisher: Bethesda Softworks

The video game Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus follows the events of Wolfenstein: The New Order which alters historical events. With the Nazi Regime ruling the world, a military resistance looks to fight back within America, acting as the nation’s second American Revolution against the Nazi rule. However, we would recommend playing the first installment, Wolfenstein: The New Order in order to follow the narrative journey of BJ Blazkowicz as he battles against the Nazi reign if you have yet to do so.

Regardless, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a fantastic video game sequel that not only continues to capture the brutality story with full of intense action and firefights. This is also a single player focused video game adventure so you’ll have to look elsewhere if you’re wanting a cooperative or multiplayer other various multiplayer game modes.
