The Best Single Player Video Games Of This Generation So Far

August 5, 2020 by Dennis Patrick

Lose yourself in these incredible single player games for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

#40 Firewatch
  • Developer: Camp Santo
  • Publisher: Panic, Campo Santo

Firewatch is the debut title for development studio’s Campo Santo. Within the game, players take on the role of a forest fire lookout named Henry. Set back in 1989, Henry’s only form of communication is through a walkie-talkie to another nearby forest fire lookout named Delilah.

Overall, Henry is tasked with maintaining the safety of the forest and preventing forest fires if possible. However, there seems to be something more going out in the woods leading to potential sabotage. During this narrative adventure title, players will discover the reason behind Henry taking a job that essentially secludes him from the outside world.

#39 Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • Developer: Monolith Soft
  • Publisher: Nintendo

Xenoblade Chronicles was a big hit for the Nintendo Wii U and the Nintendo Switch received a sequel not long after. Much of the game mechanics make a return though the story will evidently star a new character. Overall, the game is set within the world of Elysium which is made up of mostly clouds. Right from the start of the game players will be introduced to a war between kingdoms Mor Ardain and Uraya.

#38 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
  • Publisher: Bethesda Softworks

Skyrim is the fifth game in Bethesda’s ever popular series of role-playing games, The Elder Scrolls. Like its predecessors, Skyrim takes place in an open environment which is full of exploration, wonder and a whole slew of quests. You can easily spend countless hours within this fantasy world and we’d honestly be surprised to find a gamer who has yet to experience this journey. If you have yet to do so, pick up The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition as it comes with past DLC and begin to weave your very own tale.

#37 Halo 5: Guardians
  • Developer: 343 Industries
  • Publisher: Microsoft Studios

Halo 5: Guardians is currently the latest main installment to the Halo franchise. Under the new development team, 343 Industries, fans of the franchise was given a slightly different take to a Halo game. Instead of the main focus being Master Chief, players were split between our beloved hero and a new team of Spartan’s.

It seemed that Master Chief had suddenly gone rogue leaving a new team to track and discover what is going on with the famed supersoldier. There was also some slight changes to the gameplay mechanics and while this title was received with positive reviews, the game wasn’t the most welcomed installment of the series for longtime fans.

With that said, if you have yet to try the game out then we recommend giving it a go today.

#36 Hitman
  • Developer: IO Interactive
  • Publisher: Square Enix

Hitman, from developers IO Interactive, is the sixth entry in the Hitman series, and outside of the prologue, the video game takes place seven years after the events of Hitman: Absolution. Furthermore, this is an episodic video game title that holds a total of six episodes, with the first season containing all of the episodes available today.

Much like previous installments, players will be taking on the role of Agent 47, a genetically enhanced assassin, as he travels to international locations to eliminate specific targets. Each episode is more of an open-world sandbox environment where players will have to explore, infiltrate, eliminate a target, and leave without being noticed or killed.
