The game isn’t over when you reach the end credits in Dragon Quest 11. There’s still a huge amount of story left, and if you put the game down, you’re missing out on the true ending to it all. This isn’t just a post-game quest, either — there’s an entire storyline, with fully-voiced cutscenes, new characters, new locations, and a true final boss. It’s completely insane, and completely missable.
Here, I’m going to break down everything you need to know about the post-game quest; how to access it, what you need to do to change past events, and when you’ll be able to regain some of your lost powers. It might seem like a one-way trip that puts you at a disadvantage, but without spoiling everything, let’s just say it’s possible to turn everything back to normal. You can revisit areas that were previously seemingly locked-off forever, and unlock new challenges that lead to the biggest rewards. If you played all the way to the end, this stuff is worth experiencing for yourself.

[WARNING: MAJOR END-GAME SPOILERS AHEAD.]
After defeating the last boss and watching the ending credits, you’ll be invited to save your game. After saving your game, you’ll be sent straight to the title screen — and that’s it. It’s the end. Or is it?
No! Of course it isn’t the end. There is a ton of story left. Like, about 20+ hours worth of story, complete with voice-over and cutscenes. There is so much story, I’d say the game is completely missing the third act. Yes, there are actually three parts to the story — and if you shelve the game after defeating the Lord of Shadow, you’re missing a ton of content.
Here’s how to access the true ending quest.
- Reload your victory save file. There’s a star on the save file, showing you’ve completed the main quest.
- After a short celebration, you’ll be free to leave and explore the world. To begin the quest proper, travel to the Dundrasil Region — go to the northern area, where strange ruins have appeared in the lake.
- Explore the ruins, and look behind the mural. Walk through the crack on the left side to collect the Wheel of Time.
- Take the Wheel of Time to the tower northwest of Yggdrasil. You’ll need to fly there with your whale buddy.
- Reach the Lost Lands and insert the Wheel of Time into the tower doors. Travel to the top floor, and agree to travel to the past — you’ll have to go alone.
- When you travel back in time, you’ll retain everything in your inventory.
- You’ll lost the Sword of Time.
- You’ll keep your level, but all other characters in your party will revert to the level / equipment they were carrying right before you enter the First Forest.
- After travelling back in time, you’ll join your party in Arborea. Travel up the First Forest and enter the World Tree to confront Jasper a second time.
- This time, you can beat Jasper! Equip and use the Sword of Shadows to break through Jasper’s invulnerable shield.
- Once Jasper is defeated, you’ll travel to Heliodor and confront Mordegan in a boss battle. Defeat him, and the true villain of DQ11 will appear.
- Go to the Emerald Coast to get a better look at the fallen star in the distance — Veronica will help you summon your whale friend.
- With the whale and flute back, you can now travel to Haven’s Above. Go there!
- At Haven’s Above, you’ll finally unlock all the locked abilities your party lost when you travelled back in time. All their abilities will become available, and they’ll return to their normal, full level.
And from there, you’ll be able to complete the main story quest! For the first step, you’ll have to explore different optional areas to collect recollections of the past from Yggdrasil Seedlings. There are three of these, and watching the memories will show you what to do next. It’s all straightforward from here.
It’s completely crazy that DQ11 hides so much story behind the end credits — and after kicking you back to the title screen! This isn’t just extra content, this is the true ending of the game.
