2018 has already seen a number of incredible video game announcements and we have yet to roll into the E3 expo. While more games are bound to be announced at the upcoming event set later this year, we’re looking at some of the most promising video game titles that have been revealed so far. Take a look at our picks down below and you might just find a new video game title to keep tabs on for future updates.
As always, we’ll continue to monitor and update this list so check back often for new exciting video game announcements!
Super Smash Bros
2018 made it official, Nintendo Switch owners are getting a Super Smash Bros. title but what’s icing on the cake is that gamers will be able to purchase the game this year. There are not too many fine details released for the game quite yet and most gamers are questioning if this is a brand new installment.
While this could potentially be a port from the Nintendo Wii U release, there are bound to be plenty of new players who didn’t purchase Nintendo’s last generation console. Likewise, the roster of characters that is ready to duke it out remains a mystery. The staple characters will obviously return and we do know that Splatoon characters are joining in, but for now, we’re going to keep our eyes peeled for any and all news for this upcoming title.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Since the 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider release, a resurgence for the franchise hit an all-time high. We couldn’t get enough of Lara Croft and her grand expedition journeys filled with fighting off a slew of corrupt organizations. The latest upcoming title to the main series franchise is titled, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and we can expect a launch on September 14, 2018.
Again, much like Super Smash Bros., there are not too many details released in regards to the upcoming video game. The title suggests we will see a darker narrative tone this time around and we’re interested in seeing if Trinity remains the antagonist force Lara will be up against.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
There seems to be a trend in our list as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is yet another title that was announced this year but given very few details on what players can expect. We do know that this upcoming installment of the Call of Duty franchise will follow after Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.
At the time of writing this, there is a rumor circling around the internet suggesting that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be shipping without the standard solo campaign and instead there would be more of a multiplayer focus gameplay. While this is purely a rumor and speculation, we’re interested in seeing if the development team Treyarch is seeking to launch the game and potentially release a campaign update at a later time.
We should know soon enough as the game is set to launch on October 12, 2018, but in the meantime, remember this is purely a rumor at the current moment.
Planet Alpha is an interesting little indie title that is currently in the works for a release later this year. The game puts players in an alien world where the protagonist is injured and seeking help. As you progress throughout the world, your goal turns into staying alive while using a new found power of controlling the time of day.
This should result in not only a visually stunning little title from developers Planet Alpha ApS but also as a strategic journey. Currently, there is no set release date attached to this title yet, but the developers are seeking a launch within the third quarter of this year.
Mario Tennis Aces
The Mario franchise has been known to include a number of sports titles over the years and it seems that we’ll be getting another one for the Nintendo Switch on June 22, 2018. Mario Tennis Aces is an upcoming sports game that follows the Mario Tennis series. Players will be taking control of various characters from the Mario franchise as they battle it out through tennis matches.
Gameplay will be lighthearted and with a more arcade emphasis as players will be able to use a variety of shots and blocks to win a match. An interesting little side note when it comes to Mario Tennis Aces is that gamers will receive a story mode full of missions and boss battles.
Dark Souls Remastered
Dark Souls released all the way back in 2011 so it’s been available to play for quite some time now. However, if you were uninterested in going back to this highly beloved action RPG simply due to the visual standpoint then you’ll be delighted to know the game will be receiving a remastered edition.
There’s not very much to say about this upcoming title if you’ve already enjoyed it on last generation consoles. This remastered edition will retain the same gameplay mechanics but there will be a facelift to help give the game a nice touch up for modern day consoles. Likewise, the game will receive improved framerate, resolution and the Artorias of the Abyss DLC.
If you enjoyed the old classics such as Contra then you may appreciate the upcoming Blazing Chrome video game. This is an indie title that is inspired by both Control and Metal Slug where players will be battling in nonstop action and avoiding any and all bullets that come their way.
Visually, the game looks like it belongs right in the mix with the Sega Genesis and gameplay footage definitely has us hoping this futuristic side scrolling shooter releases at some point this year.
We have at least one VR title on our list and that’s the upcoming Oculus exclusive, Defector. Coming from Twisted Pixel, Defector is a VR title that puts players in the role of a super spy agent who must complete the objective by any means necessary.
From what we can tell, the game will play similarly to a James Bond film, where gamers must carefully talk their way through a narrative and take out the henchmen that get in the way. We’re eager to hear more about this game as it looks to potentially be a big hit when it launches later this year.
