#31 Dead Island 2
Platform: PC PS4 Xbox One PS5 XSX|S
Release Date: April 21, 2023
Epicgames | Playstation | Xbox
It took years and multiple development studios to bring a sequel to Dead Island. Fortunately, the wait has ended, and you can dive right into Dead Island 2. The game takes place several years after the first installment, where we’re now dealing with a zombie plague outbreak in California. You’re just one of the unlucky few stuck in Los Angeles and on a journey to find an escape. Soon into the game, your protagonist will discover they are immune to the disease, and their blood could be the cure, but it’s a long way to reach an extraction point. Gameplay is similar to the first installment, focusing on melee combat. Fortunately, you can play this game online with friends. Currently, at the time of writing this description, Dead Island 2 supports up to three players online. All you need to do is reach about thirty minutes into the campaign before the cooperative mode opens up. From there, you and your friends can go through the storyline with progression carrying over to each player.
#30 Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
- Publisher: 2K Games
- Developer: Gearbox Software
- Platform: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, PC
- Release Date: March 2022
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a rare find in terms of co-op games, in that it caters for both online multiplayer as well as a local co-op with split-screen. For Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the game can be played in two-player local split-screen mode. It even supports four-player split-screen supported on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is in addition to online co-op and crossplay. The level of challenge presented by the game’s enemies increases with the size of your party, to ensure that gameplay is really engaging as you progress through the Wonderlands. This is a great game for co-op fans, with so much to explore and do, and refreshingly, so many ways to do it in co-op mode.
#29 Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
The LEGO Star Wars franchise is secretly one of the better co-op franchises out there. Because with its LARGE roster of characters you can have fun with, you and your friends can have a unique adventure in a ‘galaxy far, far away’ while not being made to feel as though your co-op gameplay doesn’t matter.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is one that you’ll definitely want to play with friends because you have a long journey ahead of you in it. With nine movies to play in that are “LEGO Style” you’ll have plenty of characters to be, abilities to use, and yes, collectibles to find.
#28 Streets of Rage 4
Streets of Rage was a massive hit video game franchise back during the days of the Sega Genesis. This was a beat ‘em up title that had players going through a corrupted city and fighting off the criminals that have caused so much mayhem. While the series was a hit for the console, it didn’t see any new releases after Streets of Rage 3 launched in 1994. While fans have released their own fan games for the franchise into the marketplace, fans were shocked to see Streets of Rage make a comeback in 2020.
This Streets of Rage 4 installment takes place a few years after the events of Streets of Rage 3 where a new criminal empire has been established leaving the iconic cast to make a return in clearing the city up once again. Played out in a similar side-scrolling beat ‘em up style, the title brings out some iconic characters and new faces into the mix. Levels feel longer than before and you’ll have a wide range of enemy bosses to battle with as well. Fortunately, you can connect with friends and go through this title just as you did back during those Sega Genesis days.
#27 Borderlands 3
Borderlands has quite the strong following so chances are you might have already gone through Borderlands 3. While the earlier games are thrilling, Borderlands 3 can still be enjoyed without playing the previous games. There will be some references, but that shouldn’t stop you from diving into this game. These games are all about playing with friends. You have a narrative to get through and there is storyline progression, but a lot of the fun is just grinding away for bigger and better loot. Working with friends makes things a bit more chaotic and fun as you gun down the different enemies that spawn around the area or face off against a more challenging boss.
#26 Outriders
Those of you interested in a looter shooter might find some fun with Outriders. This is a new game that came out in 2021 so there’s bound to be plenty of updates added into the title to further support the game. In the title, we’re thrown into a different world called Enoch after Earth has started to run low on resources. However, within this world, humans began to evolve with new supernatural powers which you’ll use to fight against different alien hostels.
While the game is new and there’s bound to be plenty of updates as mentioned, at the time of writing this description, there are some bugs and technical issues that the studio could probably tweak. As a result, this is a title that’s worth keeping tabs on, or at the very least you can give the demo a try to see if this RPG hybrid is something you and your friends could get into.
#25 Star Wars Squadrons
There are a ton of great Star Wars games and one that seems to always get sales is titles based around space battles. Just like any typical flight game, the controls will have players zipping around as you battle against hostile enemy ships. Set after the events of Return of the Jedi, players get a look at both sides of the war. As you can expect with these types of games, there are some online PvP modes where you can join with friends to complete the objective like an assault of a flagship. Here you’ll work together in these space battles where you’ll get to take control of different starfighters and create some custom loadouts. If you enjoyed some of the past space battling Star Wars titles like the Star Wars Rogue Squadron series then chances are you’ll find this title just as enjoyable.
#24 Grounded
Grounded is an early access title at the time of writing this that you might find some interest in. In this game, players are taking the role of a child where you’re shrunk to the size smaller than an ant. It’s here that you’ll need to fight off the dangerous pests from within the backyard such as massive spiders. You’ll also need to craft up items and build up a shelter. Of course, there is something a bit more at play here as you explore around, but we’ll refrain from spoiling anything else here. As the developers continue to work on this title, we can expect more storyline, bugs, new crafting recipes, and biomes added into the mix.
#23 Elden Ring
Elden Ring was a game on quite a few fans’ anticipated 2022 release lists. We’re sure you’re already well informed about the game. It’s the next thrilling action RPG release from the folks at FromSoftware. If you’re not familiar with the studio name, they brought out the Souls franchise, and their next game is another challenging combat experience. With the help of author George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring offers players another bleak, dark fantasy world to go through. Players are getting a large open-world map, loot to gather, and plenty of boss battles to get through this time. Because of the open-world map, players here will have more freedom in how they progress through the game. You might even get a few replays out of Elden Ring, as the title will have multiple endings to unlock. Of course, there is cooperative gameplay. It does require a process to connect with a friend, but once you’re in the game, going through different boss battles can be a bit easier to manage.
#22 State of Decay 2
State of Decay 2 is a zombie-survival game that lets players have their own unique story. While battling zombies is very much a key aspect of the title, players are encouraged to work together in setting up their own community that’s able to successfully take out the undead threat.
A large part of the game is also managing and upgrading your base. The larger your base gets the more resources it will need forcing you to go out into the wilderness filled with flesh eating monsters. Of course, you’ll be able to work with friends as the game does offer four-player cooperative gameplay.
#21 Sea of Thieves
Sea of Thieves is all about being a pirate with a crew. Scavenge for treasure, loot islands, take to the open sea, and battle against other crews that are unfortunate enough to come across your pathway.
Since the game released, developers over at Rare have supported with new content updates and expansions that add regions or enemies into world. We imagine this game will be supported for a good while though the game heavily relies on players jumping online and playing the game with friends.
#20 Far Cry: New Dawn
If you recall Far Cry 5, the video game ended on a cliffhanger with the world being hit with a number of nuclear attacks. As a result, players pick back up years later in the same Hope County where the world vegetation has started to grow back. The citizens that remain after the end of Joseph Seed’s reign now have a new threat to deal with. A group being by ran by twins known as the Highwaymen are taking all the available resources and you’re left to save the day.
We won’t spoil the narrative but you may find some familiar locations and individuals that dwell the lands. Likewise, similar to Far Cry 5, there is a multiplayer cooperative game mode where you can go through different missions with friends. With that said, Far Cry 6 is coming out in October of 2021 so this might be a game to hold you over until then.
#19 Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a spin-off of the incredibly popular Borderlands franchise. We’ll be going through this game following the iconic and chaotic Borderlands 2 character, Tiny Tina. However, it’s worth noting that you don’t have to play any of the Borderlands games to enjoy this title. Instead, players are getting a standalone experience here where the focus is around a fantasy world where spells and melee weapons take the lead. With that said, players can expect the same loot system where you’ll come across a plethora of unique gear pieces. You’ll also find that this game will thrive when played with friends. You and your group of buddies can go through this new whimsical adventure, fighting off monsters and seeking to end the tyrannical Dragon Lord today. For the PlayStation 4, you can have up to two players in local cooperative gameplay.
#18 A Way Out
A Way Out is an action-adventure journey from Hazelight Studios. This will be the second video game to be directed by Josef Fares who you may be familiar with from his previous title, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
The A Way Out video game is an unique action-adventure title when compared to other selections on this list as it will require two players at all times. Regardless if you play locally or online, the display will be split to showcase both players as you work together to successfully escape your incarceration. Both character stories will be told simultaneously and while one character may be in a cutscene, the other will be able to freely move and execute their tasks making it a game that heavily focuses on teamwork.
#17 Call of Duty Zombies
A number of Call of Duty installments offer a fantastic co-op multiplayer game mode which is often referred to as zombies. Players are often tasked with surviving a wave of zombies and must work together in order to complete tasks or unlock new areas of the map.
Currently, the latest installment within the franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, offers the zombies game mode which can be enjoyed online or through local couch co-op. It’s a thrilling experience despite whatever installment you pick up and play whether you’re looking to complete the different objectives or simply see how far you can get with the onslaught of zombie hordes.
#16 Overcooked
Overcooked is a cooking simulator type video game. Developed by Ghost Town Games, players take on the role of a chef who must prepare a variety of meals within the time limit. However, the game is filled with obstacles and hazards forcing players to quickly work together in order to send out the desired meal recipes that come up. You can even find a sequel available for this game if you enjoy the gameplay.
#15 Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
Set after the events of The Division, Ubisoft’s sequel follows a new terror innocent civilians have to deal with in the United States. The factions that have are thriving has made it difficult for people to get by and that’s where the Division group comes into play. Set to aid and help those who are trying to pick up their lives after the first pandemic in The Division, players are left with trying to preserve order once again.
This is also an online based video game and it works best with a group of fellow players. The development team is providing plenty of post-launch content as well to keep players logging back on. Furthermore, you don’t have to go through the first title to enjoy this current installment today. Even though we’re currently in 2021, it looks like the development team will continue to support this game, but we shouldn’t be too far out from a new installment taking over.
#14 Sonic Mania
Sonic the Hedgehog is a staple video game character. Decades have passed and to this day, there are still new Sonic games being pumped out. Sonic Mania is a side-scrolling platformer that fans of the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game will be familiar with as this particular Sonic title will return to the original gameplay and visual art styles. However, gamers can expect new boss fights, expanded levels along with new elements new to the franchise. You can get cooperative gameplay in this title as well with a secondary player helping out during those big boss fights.
#13 Diablo 3
The third installment of the Diablo series by developers Blizzard Entertainment made its way to PC, but also consoles. Playing out much like its predecessors, gamers pick one of six possible character classes and begin their journey of taking on quests and grabbing up precious loot. Of course, the game works best when you gather a group of friends to go through this action RPG hack-and-slash title.
#12 Fortnite
Fortnite has become one of the biggest, if not the biggest battle royale games to have ever released. This title continues to thrive today long after its initial launch. Here players are working to be the last man or team standing while the map continues to shrink down in size. Throughout the game players are looting for better weapons or gear while taking out the enemy players that pops up. One of the reason so many players join online to compete in these matches is the crossover events. You’ll find characters from different shows, movies and games featured in this title. Meanwhile the map will change up over time with each new season. Best of all, this is a free-to-play video game title so you and your friends can join online without paying a dime.
#11 Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Halo 5: Guardians is currently the latest main installment to the Halo franchise. Under the new development team, 343 Industries, fans of the franchise was given a slightly different take to a Halo game. Instead of the main focus being Master Chief, players were split between our beloved hero and a new team of Spartan’s.
It seemed that Master Chief had suddenly gone rogue leaving a new team to track and discover what is going on with the famed supersoldier. There was also some slight changes to the gameplay mechanics and while this title was received with positive reviews, the game wasn’t the most welcomed installment of the series for longtime fans.
#10 Rocket League
It doesn’t take very much to describe Rocket League. The game quickly exploded in popularity when it launched back in 2015 and its popularity still holds strong to this day. Essentially, Rocket League is a soccer title though played with fast vehicles that can launch into the air to either block or knock the ball into a goal post. However, since its release this game has went free-to-play so you and your friends can join together as a team while competing other players online.
#9 Cuphead
Cuphead, developed by StudioMDHR Entertainment, is a run and gun platform indie title. Overall, the narrative follows Cuphead and his brother Mugman, as they end up making a terrible bet against the devil. Losing the bet, Cuphead and Mugman are forced to give their souls to the devil, but it seems that our protagonist duo can save themselves if they go out and collect debts.
The devil has a number of souls that are owed to him by other sorrowful cartoon characters. If Cuphead and Mugman can go out and collect all the souls then the devil may just allow them to keep their own souls in return. However, debt collecting is easier said than done, both Cuphead and Mugman will have a difficult road ahead of themselves. Players will be able to play together as they face off against a slew of boss battles and platforming levels.
#8 Destiny 2
Bungie’s Destiny franchise is heavily focused on connecting with friends as you go through the various campaign quests. The latest installment, Destiny 2, brings in a whole new campaign, Exotic Weapons, Crucible Maps, Strikes, Raids, and more.
A quick turnoff for some gamers may be the repetitiveness you could find yourself in while going through Destiny 2 as there could be some grinding involved. Likewise, because there’s a bigger influence in going through the campaigns or side missions with a team, this would be a game best played with some friends. Developers over at Bungie has continued to add new expansions and content into this game. Likewise, this is another game that has went free-to-play.
#7 Apex Legends
Apex Legends is a battle royale video game title. It’s quickly becoming the latest and greatest within the genre due to the fact that is also another free video game title to download. Likewise, Respawn Entertainment kept this game a secret which generated a ton of hype when it was released into the market. Gamers quickly downloaded this title and it gathered millions of players within its initial launch week. Again, the game is a battle royale title so ultimately this first-person shooter will have players striving to be the last man standing. Players will find that the game will focus on teams of three and that the characters featured are hero classed based which offers their own unique attributes and abilities.
#6 Divinity: Original Sin 2
Divinity: Original Sin 2 takes place after the first installment. During a time of wars and religious persecution, Bishop Alexandar the Innocent declares all Sorcerers to be criminals. Now a group of four Sorcerers embark on a journey to defeat the Bishop. Players can join together in a party as well making the journey cooperative. The game did originally release on the PC platform back in 2017 where it was a massive hit from both critics and fans alike. Now Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners will get the chance to go through the game with a companion.
#5 Monster Hunter: World
The Monster Hunter franchise is consistently growing and with each new installment a number of new gamers explore the monster filled worlds development studio Capcom has crafted. Monster Hunter: World marks as the fifth main installment to the franchise and as you can expect, there is a number of notable updates. For instance, Capcom has placed larger maps, a more seamless experience between zones and what’s a Monster Hunter video game without the ability to hunt with friends? Outside of the offline campaign, the game will allow a four-player online co-op opportunity. While this is not the latest installment to the Monster Hunter franchise, it is one that you can play with friends on Xbox One.
#4 Dying Light 2 Stay Human
One of the more anticipated game releases for 2022 was Techland’s sequel to Dying Light. With Dying Light 2, we’re getting a narrative set a few years after the first game’s events. Here, players are taking the role of Aiden, seeking information about where his missing sister might be. Of course, this is set in another haven city as humanity strives to avoid the undead horde. A big part of the game is still very much parkour traversal. Aiden is skilled at quickly moving around the town and using melee combat, which is pretty crucial in quickly getting around the city from both thugs and the undead. Best of all, if you want to play with friends, Dying Light 2 Stay Human offers up to four-player cooperative support.
There is a slight catch here since you can’t actually start the game right off the bat with co-op. Instead, you’ll need to go through the first hour or so of the game. It’s essentially a section to catch you up on the narrative you’re embarking on and some of the mechanics. Afterward, you’ll be able to enable co-op support where you can join or invite friends to a game. Essentially, you’re able to go through the rest of the game with friends. Fortunately, the gear and XP progression you make during the game will carry over as well, so you’re still able to gain some progress for your character back into the single-player component. Likewise, because this game offers a focus on choices throughout the campaign, only the host will be able to make those choices.
#3 Minecraft
Minecraft continues to bring in plenty of gamers to enjoy the endless crafting and exploring of a randomly generated world. The video game has been around since 2011 where players are set to survive in a pixelated block world. In order to do so, the game will have players seek out various resources while building a shelter that would protect the player from the hostile enemies that spawn in the world. This continues to be a thrilling game to play with friends as you attempt to survive the mobs and harsh environmental hazards. Otherwise, you can simply get creative and build up your own unique world together.
#2 Grand Theft Auto Online
Grand Theft Auto V is a massive hit and it’s one game that despite being a number of years old now, the community is very much active. When the title first launched on last generation consoles, the game was the standard third-person open world experience filled with crime and chaos. However, it was a bit later on after the initial launch of this game that the developers brought out an online component.
The online game community for Grand Theft Auto Online, as mentioned, is quite active and you won’t have any trouble finding players to enjoy the game with today. Whether that is gathering a crew to go out and complete online campaign missions, race against, or the random events that will occur, you’ll undoubtedly have plenty of chaotic fun. While the studio has continued to support this online game mode years after its release, we’re bound to start seeing a new installment to the mainline Grand Theft Auto franchise which may mean we’ll soon see a drop in players logging into this game.
#1 It Takes Two
What would you do if your parents were about to divorce and you thought your world was about to end? Well, in It Takes Two, you’re apparently going to turn them into your beloved dolls and they’ll have to figure out how to get back to normal, all the while solving puzzles and working out their stuff. Trust us, it makes sense.
And if you can get beyond the wacky premise, It Takes Two does indeed change the way you think about co-op games because this one IS a co-op game full stop. You need your partner to work your way through the levels and puzzles. And like a TRUE marriage, you’re only as good as your relationship with your other half.
So if you want a game that will test out your skills at working together, It Takes Two is definitely the game for you
