Ring in the new year with a taste of that old retro magic in the Diablo 3 ‘Darkening of Tristram’ event. There’s an array of collectible cosmetics your hero can earn by completing certain tasks — there are hidden pets, fancy old-school banners, and unique transmogrify customizations to unlock. Here, we’re going to go through everything.
The best of the bunch are the pets. You can get two new pets; a hellish bovine and a pint-sized Butcher, based on the iconic boss of the same name. That’s just the tip of the customization iceberg. Of course, there are tons of unique items available to collect in the Labyrinth, and four big bosses to fight — from the Butcher all the way down to Diablo himself.

How to Unlock Every New Cosmetic
The following cosmetics are exclusive to ‘The Darkening of Tristram’ event, available between January 1st through January 30th.
Banner Cosmetics
- Kill all 4 bosses — each one drops a different banner element.
- The Butcher: Lvl 2 – Inside a corner room with 2 doors.
- The Skeleton King: Lvl 3 – Inside the “King Leoric’s Tomb” side-dungeon.
- Arch-Bishop Lazarus: Unholy Altar – Upper level, to the left.
- Diablo: Lvl 16 – On the very bottom level of the dungeon.
Unlockable Pets
- The Butcher: To unlock the Butcher, enter the Labyrinth on a new Level 1 character and kill all four bosses.
- To do this, make sure you start a new character during the ‘Darkening of Tristram’ event and go straight for the Labyrinth portal.
- The Royal Calf: To unlock this tiny Hell Bovine, you’ll need to unlock the Secret Cow Level.
- To unlock the Secret Cow Level, you’ll need to get Wirt’s Leg. Find out how to get Wirt’s Leg in the Transmogrify Customization list below.
- After getting Wirt’s Leg, salvage Wirt’s Leg at the blacksmith, then go to Adria’s Hut. Touch the dead cows in this order; center, left, right.
- Inside the Secret Cow Level, loot Wirt’s Stash to get the pet.
Transmogrify Customization
- The Butcher’s Cleaver: The easiest customization item to unlock is dropped by the very first boss, The Butcher, in Level 2 of the Labyrinth.
- Wirt’s Leg: To get the recipe for Wirt’s Leg, reach Level 9 of the Labyrinth and loot the mushrooms until you get a “Rotten Mushroom” item.
- Go to Adria’s Hut in Tristram and use the cauldron to get the Witch’s Brew.
- Next, go to the Ruins of Tristram and touch the corpses in this order; Farnham, Ogden, Pepin, and Griswold. The last body will drop the Wirt’s Leg recipe.
- Use the recipe at the blacksmith. It can be crafted for one million gold.
- Red Soulstone: The last transmogrify customization item is dropped by Diablo himself on Level 16 of the Labyrinth.
- Slot the gem into a Helmet to transmogrify.
Portrait Customization
- Classic Angel: To get the Classic Angel Frame for your portrait, you’ll need to find and kill 7 Temporal Priests that look like cultists.
- Each of the 7 waypoint zones has 1 of the Temporal Priests. Teleport to each and kill the cultists to collect all 7 pages.
- Classic Demon: To get the Classic Demon Frame, you’ll need to find and kill all 40 Unique Boss Monsters in the Labyrinth. Here’s a quick breakdown of every Unique Monster and which level you’ll need to search to kill them.
- Level 2: Rotfeast the Hungry, Shadowbite
- Level 3: Madeye the Dead, Brokenhead Bangshield
- Level 4: Gharbad the Weak, Blackash the Burning, Snotspill
- Level 5: Foulwing, Shadowcrow, Bloodskin Darkbow
- Level 6: Bilefroth the Pitmaster, Bloodgutter, Deathshade Fleshmaul
- Level 7: Gorestone, Nightwing the Cold, Blighthorn Steelmace
- Level 8: Firewound the Grim, Zhar the Mad, Baron Sludge
- Level 9: Oozedrool, Brokenstorm, Breakspine
- Level 10: Goldblight of the Flame, The Flayer, Blackstorm
- Level 11: Fangspeir, Bluehorn
- Level 12: Viperflame, Lionskull the Bent, Viletouch
- Level 13: Witchmoon, Warlord of Blood, Rustweaver
