Lichtspeer: Double Speer Edition First Impressions: An Addicting Little Game With Very Challenging Gameplay

October 31, 2017 by Jordan Biazzo

Does a violent Angry Birds game sound fun to you? Then this game is for you!

Game: Lichtspeer: Double Speer Edition

Publisher: Crunching Koalas

Developer: Lichthund

Reviewed: Nintendo Switch

Lichtspeer: Double Speer Edition is one of the many games to have been ported to Nintendo’s latest console, the Switch. It is a simple game that captures the true essence of addictive gameplay, while also managing to keep players on their toes with the difficulty of the game. At its core, Lichtspeer is a very simple game, the best way to describe it is by comparing to the hit mobile phenomenon title, Angry Birds. However, this time the animations are brutal and the gameplay is a lot harder.

The game starts off with the main protagonist coming across a bored god that uses you for his entertainment. After gaining some magical abilities, you are faced with mowing down waves and waves of enemies. At first, the game starts off super easy only throwing a couple of enemies at a time. But as the game progresses, it quickly becomes relentless.

The game is tough, you will die plenty of times no matter how good you might be. Enemy variants are enough to keep players on their toes from big giant trolls who need two shots (or one headshot) to flying birds who constantly dodge your speers. Unlike Angry Birds, you are basically being timed to complete the mission. If the enemy reaches you before you kill them, then boom, game over. It’s a very adrenaline filled mechanic that works really well when you’re in the mood for it, other times it can just start to get frustrating.

The actual button layout is super easy to learn as it is only a couple of controls to learn. You move the joysticks in the direction you want the speer to go, and hold the action button to line up the arc of the shot. After that, you let go and hopefully manage to nail your target straight in the head. This is one of the reasons Lichtspeer is so fun to play; its super easy to learn, but difficult to master.

As you play throughout the 13 main levels of the game, you will come across upgrades and new abilities to help you alongside your journey. New upgrades like a multi-arrow bomb will come in handy as enemies come at an alarming quick speed.

Another awesome feature about Lichtspeer is that having this game be the double speer edition, it comes with a local co-op addition. This will come into help tremendously as you will most definitely want that extra help from your friend. This feature is exclusive to the Switch version, so that is something to keep in mind.

From the enemies to the different locations you come across throughout the game, the art stands out beautifully. Maybe its due to the developers being from Poland or maybe something entirely else, but the art from this game caught my attention from the first trailer; and it doesn’t disappoint when I actually booted up the game.

Lichtspeer is a great little game that a lot of people might pass up. It’s easy to miss it when there are so many other games out there on the Switch, but for the cheap price of $10 bucks, it makes it really hard to not recommend. And not only is the price right, the game in itself is superb. It’s addicting, fun, and super challenging. If you like to good challenge, then Lichtspeer is right up your alley.
