Guild Wars 2 is Getting New PvP Features, Custom Arenas

October 10, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

Guild Wars 2 is getting a host of new features for its PvP.

GW 2 PVP

PvP—or “structured PvP” as the developers call it—is a big part of Guild Wars 2, and it’s getting some major upgrades, ArenaNet announced today. The coming features include free automated tournaments, paid automated tournaments, and custom arenas.

At the moment, the game only has free automated tournaments, which are designed to be friendly to new players and introduce them to the PvP system. They allow players to form random teams and fight for loot. Players can join up with a pre-built team or sign up as solo players to be automatically matched with others. Now instead of doing battle for the sake of it, players can stand to earn various rewards which include 3 different ranks of free tournament reward chests (gold, silver, and copper), and varying amounts of glory and rank points.

Once players have gotten used to the free automated tournaments, they can move on to paid tournaments, which require an entry fee to participate in. Granted, you won’t have to pay real money, but you will have to pay in the form of tickets, which you can purchase at the gem store or find in reward chests. Unlike free tournaments, every team participating in a paid tournament will receive a reward, so it’s well worth your while to try it out. Best of all, you can even win gems.

Finally, custom arenas are being added to the game. This allows teams to partake in scrims against other premade teams. Custom arenas are special PvP maps which players will soon be able to rent, and use to host scrims, test strategies, and even set up passwords so only your friends can access it.

The breakdown for the rewards can be found at ArenaNet’s website here.
