Broken Wii U GamePads Will Be Replaced by Nintendo “for a Fee”

September 17, 2012 by Alex Co

Nintendo GamePads for the Wii U won’t be available at retail in the US at launch, but Nintendo will replace broken ones for a fee.

If you're like most gamers, chances are you kept a close eye on what Nintendo had planned for the Wii U at launch. While we already know the details, one thing has not been made clear…until now.

First off, Wii U GamePads won't be sold separately at launch — at least for the time being. Not that it's a big deal since there's no game within the launch window that capitalizes on it, either. Also, seeing as it's going for more than $150 per piece in Japan, I doubt anyone is in a hurry to acquire more than one.

No matter how careful you are, accidents do happen and with the GamePad sporting a sizeable screen, it wouldn't surprise me if it gets broken than your usual controller. So, what should you do if and when your GamePad breaks?

As it turns out, Nintendo will replace but for a fee. This was revealed by Owen Allen, Nintendo of America rep on an email to GimmeGimmeGames,

Hello,

Thanks for writing. I can appreciate your interest in the Wii U! To address your inquiries directly, I can tell you that individual replacement Wii U GamePad controllers will be available from Nintendo Consumer Service for a fee. In regard to warranty coverage for that accessory, at this time no specific announcements have been made. However, it’s worth noting that Nintendo warranties do not cover physical damage.

Sincerely,

Owen Allen

Nintendo of America Inc.

There you have it. Of course, we have no idea how much this "fee" would cost, but that's better than buying a new Wii U just because you wrecked your GamePad, right?

Hopefully, Nintendo puts an official price and releases the GamePad individually in the US, too, no? If not, Wii U buyers should hope that the people that borrow their Wii U GamePads is as careful as they are.

Is this an issue for you at all or are you fine with Nintendo not having separate GamePads available at launch?
