There’s a certain Hollywood formula for playing at your heartstrings which Disney has perfected over its many decades of cultural domination. Most Western viewers don’t even need to actively tune in to recognize the patterns: take one plucky underdog, mix in a dash of identity crisis, and finish with some surprisingly comfortable philosophical memorandum on accepting one’s social station and lot in life. Ahh… a feel-good movie.
That roughly appears to be the trajectory for Disney’s upcoming Wreck-It Ralph, about an arcade baddy who, sick of his thankless job as an antagonist, escapes his game in search of a hero’s welcome. Of course, he’s a bumbling oaf voiced by John C. Reilly, so what are the odds that’s going to work out?
Everyone seems fixated on the movie’s cameos, however, and for good reason since Disney snuck nearly 200 of them in there. Honestly, Wreck-It Ralph could be an entirely paint-by-numbers affair and a lot of gamers would still pay to see it just to see how many characters they can spot. And on that note, hey, how about a new trailer!
Look, there’s Tapper! You’re welcome.
