The turn of a new year brings resolutions, promises, new beginnings, and, of course, winter television premieres. Existing shows come back for new seasons while new shows seek a place in your viewing habits. Here’s a look at the TV shows debuting in January 2017.
The Mick
Coming to Fox on January 3rd, The Mick follows a Rhode Island woman forced to move to the very affluent Greenwich, Connecticut to take care of her sister’s children. Her sister and brother-in-law decided to flee the country to avoid being apprehended for fraud charges.
The sitcom stars Kaitlin Olson of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame, so this one looks like it will fall into the “dramedy” category.
Emerald City
NBC is hoping to capitalize on market popularity, and continue the trend of reimagining old classics, with this adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s Land of Oz book series.
Of course, this one has the interesting distinction of being related to one of the most beloved movies of all-time, The Wizard of Oz.
By the looks of it, Emerald City is a darker take on Baum’s world, meaning that it may be targeting an older audience.
Emerald City premieres on January 6th. The first season is slated to run for ten episodes.
One Day at a Time

The next new Netflix original series is based off of the 1975 series of the same name. The sitcom centers around a recently divorced mother raising her teenage children. Based on the leading roles, this new spin appears as if it will shake up the dynamic from the original. Justina Machado of Six Feet Under fame stars, and the show adds to its impressive cast of talent as the brilliant Stephen Tobolowsky will play a lead role.
As usual for Netflix, when the series drops on January 6th, every episode will be available.
My Kitchen Rules
Does the world really need another cooking competition show? Apparently, yes. Based on the Australian show of the same name, My Kitchen Rules will pit teams against each other to see who can host the best dinner party.
The American version will feature celebrities such as Lance Bass, Andrew Dice Clay, and Ray J. My Kitchen Rules will premiere January 12th on Fox.
Victoria
The British television show starring Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria is set to start airing on PBS on January 15th. Coleman left Doctor Who to take on the historic role, and while this show may not appeal to everyone, it was already renewed for a second season in Britain. With the collective American fascination with the Royal Family, it’s a safe bet that this will find an enthusiastic audience in the states.
The Young Pope
The Young Pope, originally appearing in Italy, Spanish, and France, is coming to HBO on January 15th. The show stars Jude Law as Pope Pius XIII, and Diane Keaton as Sister Mary, who raised Lenny Belardo, the future Pope, in an orphanage. While this isn’t a historical take on Pope Pius XIII, as the real one was Lucian Pulvermacher, The Young Pope nonetheless brings a factually based look at the Vatican and Catholicism. The show was recently renewed for a second season, so if the show takes off in the U.S., we can expect to see Law and Keaton co-starring on the small screen for quite some time.
Riverdale
In one of the more interesting upcoming debuts, The CW is adapting the Archie Comics. To bring in the 75th anniversary of the iconic comicstrip, viewers will get to see Archie and Jughead in live action. As are all shows on The CW, Riverdale is targeting a teenage audience, so expect to see a lot of angst and melodrama.
