Steam’s Adding PlayStation 4 Controller Support

October 13, 2016 by Dennis Patrick

You’ll soon be able to enjoy the PS4 controller outside of PlayStation Now.

Valve held their developer-only conference just yesterday and there has been some interesting news which has since leaked out into the public. For instance, there was the reveal that Valve has partnered up with Samsung to implement Steam Link right on their upcoming lineup of televisions. Today, thanks to Gamasutra, we’re finding out that Valve is adding support for the PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 controller on Steam.

In the past, there have always been a number of options to use a controller within the Steam application. However, having the application recognize Sony’s latest DualShock 4 controller has been problematic. There have been plenty of gamers that have been burned by the purchase of a DualShock 4 USB adapter for their PC, thinking they would be able to configure the controller outside the use of Sony’s PlayStation Now service.

While developers could add support for their video games to make use of the DualShock 4, you will soon be able to use the controller right on Steam. According to Gamasutra, during the Steam Dev Days presentation, it was noted that the DualShock 4 is very similar to the Steam Controller so adding support for the DualShock 4 was rather straightforward.

Steam will soon be able to recognize the DualShock 4 controller and easily replicate the buttons, triggers, and analog sticks as Microsoft’s Xbox One controllers. It’s likely that we won’t see DualShock 4 controller button layouts in-game, but for the most part, the layout will be similar to the Xbox One controller.

This will likely be a nice welcome to gamers who previously purchased the DualShock 4 USB adapter when it first launched into the market.
