Today we finally got more solid information on Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon. A video uploaded to the official Pokemon channel revealed gameplay details as well as the starter Pokemon you get to choose from.
The game will take place in the Alola region. The setting and atmosphere gives a Hawaii feeling to the area. It’s a surprising and unexpected twist, but there’s still more to come. Maybe it’s expands into other Pacific Island influences as well. The three starter Pokemon are Rowlet, Litten, and Poppilo. Overall the game seems to expand upon the direction that Pokemon X and Y were going for. Both male and female protagonists were shown off in the video too. While the names of the legendaries weren’t revealed, they were also shown in the footage.
An overlooked feature that wasn’t widely reported early on was the trainer customization options. A feature that was introduced back in Pokemon X and Y, seems to have expanded further in the Sun and Moon generation.
We can expect that these new games will offer a variety of outfit customizations too.
The Japanese Pokemon commercial for the new games tells a story of a young schoolboy. He arrives in a new city and doesn’t know anyone, and his mother picks up the new Sun and Moon Pokemon game for him. Showcasing the more accessible language features in the newer Pokemon games, the schoolboy is able to use his new Pokemon game as an ice-breaker and make some new friends. Along the way, we see additional footage from the upcoming Sun and Moon games.

Here are details about the three starters, courtesy of the Pokemon website.
- Rowlet: Rowlet can attack without making a sound! It flies silently through the skies, drawing near to its opponent without being noticed, and then lashing out with powerful kicks. It can also attack from a distance using the razor-sharp leaves that form part of its feathers.
- Litten: Logical but also passionate, Litten always remains coolheaded and doesn’t show its emotions on the surface. Litten can attack with flaming hairballs! Its fur is rich in oils and immensely flammable. Litten grooms itself by licking its fur, and then uses the collected fur as fuel for fireball attacks! When the time comes for Litten to shed its old fur, it all burns up in a glorious blaze.
- Popplio: Popplio’s swimming speed is known to exceed 25 mph. It’s better at moving in the water than on land. Still, when it’s on land, it takes advantage of the elasticity of its balloons to perform acrobatic stunts and jumps. Popplio can snort out balloons made of water! Watch it spin water balloons into a playful battle strategy!
Pokemon Sun and Moon will release on November 18th 2016 for the Nintendo 2DS and 3DS.
