In a new video, former Capcom director Hideki Kamiya expressed intense interest in developing sequels for both Okami and Viewtiful Joe. Speaking to another former Capcom dev Ikumi Nakamura, Kamiya made it clear that both series had been left unfinished, and their stories deserved to be completed properly.
“Creators have the duty to create sequels fans are wanting to see,” Kamiya said. “Although I sound all high and mighty, it’s been a while since I’ve moved on from Okami. But I still feel like I haven’t fulfilled my duty. So Capcom, please, let’s do it together. Same sentiments for Viewtiful Joe 3, I’d be more than happy.”
Although the video isn’t too serious, it’s clear that Kamiya is passionate about his work on the cult classics and eager for the chance to bring them to the current generation. The former director has nothing to do with Capcom’s business decisions, but he did mention contacting the company to complain about its lack of planned Viewtiful Joe content despite hefty fan interest.
“It’s only because eight people have played Viewtiful Joe that people aren’t going wild,” Kamiya said jokingly. “That game also ended mid-way. So I need to finish it.
I’m unemployed right now, but not super unemployed. I haven’t retired as a game creator.”
Most recently, Kamiya acted as a writer and supervising director on Bayonetta 3 and its spin-off Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. He recently left PlatinumGames due to issues of “trust,” and it’s unclear what Kamiya is currently working on, if anything.
