Mass Effect 3 Trailer Breakdown: “Build a Customizable Arsenal”

BioWare has unleashed a new batch of trailers for Mass Effect 3. We’re breaking them all down to see what we can discover.

BioWare has released a new batch of Mass Effect 3 trailers, and we're breaking them down one at a time, hoping to glean every last bit of information we can about the game before its release next month. To start things off, we're taking a look at the customization trailer to find out all the ways you can make the game your own.

The trailer starts with a look at Mass Effect 3's armor customization interface. At a glance, it appears identical to the one used by Mass Effect 2. You'll be able to modify you armor with custom parts that fill the five different slots (Head, Shoulders, Arms, Chest, and Legs), as well as through cosmetic changes to the color, material, and pattern. The only new addition seems to be the ability to add lights to your getup, which should come in handy if Commander Shepard finds himself (or herself) at a rave.

Next, we're treated to a combat montage showcasing the various types of armor you'll be able to equip. Alongside the standards, there are shots of the Kingdoms of Amalur-inspired Reckoner Knight Armor, which you can nab by playing that game's demo, and the Collector Armor, which was a DLC item in Mass Effect 2.

The next segment focuses on the weapon loadout screen, which looks identical to the version that leaked alongside the complete weapon list. You'll have five slots available in all, two on your back and three on your belt, and the more weapons you carry, the slower your biotic abilities will recharge. We also get a quick glimpse of the weapon customization screen, where you'll be able to attach up to two modifications to your guns to enhance their combat performance.

After that, there's a oh-so-brief glimpse of the game's levelling screen. It's a nice blend between Mass Effect 1 and 2, with a relatively basic layout that gives way to simplified skill trees, forcing you to choose how you'd like to specialize all of your various abilities.

Finally, we get some shots of the game's multiplayer menus. While weapons and powers are definitely customizable, it doesn't appear that you'll be able to make any changes to your armor in co-op beyond cosmetic alterations, at least not directly. There are also three mysterious "equipment" slots. Perhaps they'll function like Call of Duty-style perks.

And that's it. Despite being just a month out from the game's March 6 release (March 9, if you're in Europe), there are still plenty of unanswered questions about the Mass Effect 3. Expect quite a few surprises when the demo launches on February 14.
