It’s hard to believe it’s been a week since Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 released on PS5, alongside a certain other game on the Nintendo Switch, but that’s another article. The game has been desired ever since the first game came out, and the Miles Morales-themed spinoff tided us over. Insomniac Games wanted to do everything they could to make the game feel “better,” “grander,” and more. Based on all accounts, they succeeded. The game is rated highly on Metacritic and sold 2.5 million copies in just its first day! So yeah, it’s doing pretty well for itself.
But why not hop on more accolades, shall we? The game is so beloved that just one week into its life, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is one of the highest-rated games on the PlayStation Network. While that may not mean much at first, you’ll quickly see that it’s being rated a 4.95/5, with the reviews coming in at over 16K! Check it out for yourself in the tweet below:
We feel bad for the person who gave the game a 1-star review; it must be hard being a hater. Regardless of them, this helps solidify the game as one of the best of the year, one of the best that Insomniac Games has ever made, and, just as important, a title that absolutely lived up to the hype.
So, what was it that helped make this game so special? Without going into spoilers, the title simply took everything the first game did right and then expanded upon it. For example, Insomniac Games ensured that the threats in this game felt “big enough” to involve two Spider-Men. They didn’t want one or the other to feel like a “sidekick” or “left behind” in certain respects. To that end, you can easily switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales when you’re in the open-world sections of the game, and you can also switch between them in key parts of the storyline.
Plus, each of them has a storyline unique to them. Peter is trying to save Aunt May’s home and is slowly being corrupted by the Venom Symbiote, and Miles is dealing with emotional fallout from the loss of his dad. That says nothing of the invasion by Kraven’s hunters and the other issues the game throws at the two.
When you combine that with fun yet challenging gameplay, the best web-slinging/traversal through New York City ever, and loads of places to explore, and yeah, the game is pretty good.
