When it comes to certain AAA titles, we want to know just how well a game is doing as soon as possible after it launches. October 17-20th was one of the most packed release windows in 2023, as three AAA games were set loose upon the gaming world. While there will be some argument as to which is the “biggest one,” we already know the sales results for one of those titles, and now, it’s time to get a tease of one of the others. Specifically, Super Mario Bros Wonder has apparently done so well that Japan felt the need to show how much it dominated!
According to gaming insider Genki, who specializes in news from Japan, Super Mario Bros Wonder sold 638,000+ copies in its opening “week” in Japan. To be clear, Japan doesn’t have the same “schedule” as other parts of the world, so those copies were more than likely sold within the first two or three days. As you’ll notice, it absolutely dominated a certain web-slinging title that also came out that same day by nearly a factor of ten! Plus, as the tweet below reminds people, the digital copies of the game weren’t counted, so it’s likely that the sales are even higher!
So what does this mean? Well, it means that the latest 2D Mario game is already off to a super-hot start and is no doubt already over a million units sold worldwide if not MORE by this point. After all, while Mario is rightfully popular in Japan, he’s just as popular in other parts of the world, too! The UK has already admitted that the game had a big launch without revealing its numbers, though it should be stated that a certain Spider-Man did better than Mario in that region. Plus, the United States are huge Mario fans, as proven by how they helped launch his debut animated movie to a billion dollars at the box office earlier this year.
We might not hear from Nintendo about the “official numbers” for a few more days, but it’s clear that people are having a Wonder-ful time with the new 2D platformer. That’s great because the game honestly is great and incredibly innovative. The Wonder Flower changes alone make the game worth playing, and when you add in the updated animations, improved overall visuals, new enemies, power-ups, etc., you get an experience that is begging to be tried.
So, if you haven’t yet, get it now on Nintendo Switch!
