We have now received early word that Insomniac Games is already working on a new unannounced title.
Full Sail University presenter Erin Eberhardt let the word out on a Zoom meeting. As shared by Dream Walker on Twitter, Erin revealed that she herself is project manager on the unannounced project. You can watch the clip from the Zoom meeting below.
Soberingly, Erin was previously at the esports division for Hearthstone, making her one of many employees that were laid off by Activision Blizzard a few months back. It does seem that everything has worked out for Erin, as her new position is a clear promotion, perhaps based on her experience.
Insomniac Games has had a rich history with Sony through the years. They were acquired by Sony in 2019. However, prior to that, they were the largest independent game studio who made games for PlayStation through the years.
From nearly the start of the company, Insomniac tried to make their name with PlayStation with an early FPS on the platform, Disruptor. Their first true success came with their work on the Spyro video games from 1998 to 2000.
Subsequently, Insomniac made their own kid friendly action game franchise in the Ratchet & Clank series, starting in 2002. With the launch of the PlayStation 3, Insomniac seemingly wanted to show they could do more, and so produced the Resistance series of science fiction FPS shooters.
Prior to their acquisition, Insomniac took one shot at working with Microsoft, making the promising but ultimately disappointing Sunset Overdrive. However, Insomniac also took this opportunity to make a few games outside of their long running partnership with Sony.
Among those less remembered Insomniac games was Song of the Deep, an ocean themed 2D Metroidvania, Edge of Nowhere, a third person VR game for the Oculus Rift, and another poorly received shooter, the four player coop Fuse.
Given the company’s past, the most likely known IP that Insomniac could be working on is either another unannounced Marvel licensed video game, or a new Ratchet & Clank game. With all that in mind, it isn’t entirely impossible that Insomniac is working on a completely new game as well.
On the side, Erin shared in her Zoom that she was happy to be going ‘back home’ to Sony. She describes the company as really investing in their employees, in education, well-being and growth. She also describes Sony as having an amazing support infrastructure, interesting projects, and the best technology.
Whatever this new Insomniac project is, we’re all looking forward to learning what it is.
