One of the defining aspects of the Amnesia games is stumbling around in the dark with only a small light used to see ahead. The newest entry in the series, Amnesia: The Bunker, is no exception as the halls of the titular World War 1 structure can often times be completely pitch black with only a small flashlight leading the way. There is a way, however, to return light to the facility and that is by using the Generator. This machine can be used to return power to the lights and other macherny across the bunker while also making it safer to navigate with The Beast less likely to come out of his home in the walls. With such an important tool for surivial, players will want to know how this thing works and how to properly use it. This guide will explain to players how the Generator system works in Amnesia: The Bunker.
Generator System Explained In Amnesia: The Bunker
The Generator is found down the stairs found in the Administration Office located in the Central Bunker area. After talking to the surviving soldier and getting his pistol and ammo, go back outside the Mess Hall to find a door with a padlock on it. Shoot the lock off and go down the stairs to find another door with a red light above it. This is where you will find the Administration Office. This room will serve as the Save Room for the entire game, being a safe location where players can save their game as well as see the bunker’s general map and use an item box to manage their inventory. The Generator can be powered by putting Fuel into it and then turning the lever down to power the system. Fuel can come in two forms: one is the regular Fuel Canisters found throughout the bunker and the other is through Fuel Bottles, glass bottles that have been filled with fuel. Bring either of these items to the Generator and equip them. Go to the funnel and hold the aim button and the Interact button when the image of the item is being held appears over the funnel to pour the Fuel into the Generator.
These bottles can also be used to create Molotovs to burn bodies, but for the purposes of this guide, they are used to power the Generator. In the Maintenance section of the bunker, players can find Fuel Storage next to the Chapel, which will provide players with an infinite amount of fuel as long as they bring Empty Bottles to the room and interact with the oil drum to fill the bottles with Fuel. Both the Canisters and Bottles will give the Generator the same amount of Fuel.
Every Fuel Bottle or Canister will add two ticks to the Fuel gauge. This two-tick addition is added to where the gauge is when added but rather added to the nearest second tick. For example, if a player adds Fuel to the Generator when it is empty, the needle will go up to the second tick. If another Fuel Canister is added when the needle goes down to the first tick, it won’t go up the third tick but instead, go up to the first tick since the gauge was still in the space of the first two ticks. This can be used strategically where players can refuel the Generator right before the needle crosses between a pair of ticks to turn a single Fuel into 4 ticks on the Generator’s gauge.
When players visit the Generator the first time, they will find a pocketwatch on a bench nearby. This pocketwatch will be synced to the Generator’s Fuel Gauge, which means it can be referred to while exploring to let you know how much power is left before everything turns back off.
Having the Generator active is very important in the game since it makes exploring and navigating the bunker not just easier but considerably safer. While it is possible for the monster in the game known as The Beast to exit the walls and patrol the bunker while the Generator is active, it is far less likely to leave the safety of the walls in rooms that have the lights on. The only way The Beast will leave their hole in a lit area is when a loud noise occurs near a hole like a gunshot or explosion. The Generator is also necessary to complete certain objectives like getting the Arsenal Code from the Communications Room in Soldier Quarters.
