Helldivers 2 was today announced to be coming to PlayStation 5 and PC in 2023 at the PlayStation Showcase. The developer, Arrowhead Game Studios showed off a brand-new trailer for the game at the beginning of the show which seems to be channeling a Starship Troopers inspiration with a tonally appropriate propaganda-style trailer.
The trailer itself showed off a wide breadth of environments and aliens for you to squad up with your friends to both explore and kill in the name of “peacekeeping.”
The first Helldivers was originally released on March 4th, 2015 for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC. Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios the first title currently sits on a ‘Very Positive’ review score on Steam. As a twin-stick co-op online shooter, Helldivers very much channels the military propaganda elements of something like Starship Troopers. GAMEWATCHER originally gave Helldivers a 9.5/10 saying, “HellDivers is one of the best multiplayer games of the year.” Brash Games also described the title as “addictive and incredibly well done.” DESTRUCTOID similarly called on players to “PICK UP A KEYBOARD OR CONTROLLER AND PLAY HELLDIVERS RIGHT NOW.”
The first game was last updated in 2019 to include a training area for returning players as well as the previous year Arrowhead Game Studios added the following:
3 NEW Difficulties have been added beyond HELLDIVE!
3 NEW Enemies have been added.
A NEW Stratagem has been added (MGX-42 Machinegun).
The developers behind Helldivers and the upcoming Helldivers 2, Arrowhead Game Studios also released Magicka, Gauntlet, and The Showdown Effect. While Helldivers 2 is making its way to players a full 8 years after the originals release the tone certainly looks different but definitely shows off the ambition Arrowhead Game Studios are hoping to bring to Helldivers 2.
Helldivers 2 certainly isn’t the big first-person shooter PlayStation will be looking for but it is certainly a step in the right direction. Whether it’ll be one of the 10 live service titles Sony is looking to roll out is still unclear. Alongside this, we actually don’t know much about what Helldivers 2 is at the moment but the trailer does make it look like the sequel to Helldivers is set to be more of a third-person title as opposed to the top-down twin-stick shooter of the original.
Helldivers 2 is set to release on PlayStation 5 and PC in 2023.
