When you’re a voice actor, something that you often have to do/want to do is that when you’re not attached to a big project, you do several small projects to earn some extra cash and keep everything flowing. After all, a person has to eat, right? But some people sometimes don’t expect these smaller gigs to lead to familiar territory. Yet they do because sometimes the people behind these smaller gigs are nerds and would love nothing more than to have a crossover for their product. Thanks to David Hayter, a great example of this was reminded to the world on Twitter.
If you don’t recognize the name, David Hayter is the legendary voice of Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid franchise. From the beginning, he made Snake a legendary voice and someone you wouldn’t want to mess with. He’s voiced Snake in many forms and series, including in a certain Nintendo crossover. But arguably, his most hilarious use of the voice was during a Ford commercial. Yes, as in the truck company. They got in two of the voice actors from the series, including Hayter, to voice a Codec conversation where they would discuss the truck Ford was selling. So, after it was brought up on Twitter, Hayter revealed the truth behind the commercial:
So yeah, that happened. On the one hand, we can’t blame Hayter for not thinking Konami would agree to do the crossover. They’re not the best company when it comes to playing with others. On the other hand, however, we can certainly be happy with how things went because not only was the crossover worth it, it was rather funny and something that Ford could say was “all their own.”
Sadly, it’s pretty slim pickings if you want more news on Solid Snake and his adventures. Ever since Hideo Kojima left Konami after a massive clash with the head people of the company, the franchise has only had one entry released, and no one likes to talk about that entry for various reasons. A small ray of hope, however, is that there could be remasters or remakes of some of the franchise’s best entries coming out. In addition, Konami has been working on revitalizing some of its properties as of late, so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for it to happen with Solid Snake.
Only time will tell. But we hope that commercial makers get creative with their ads like Ford once did.
