Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is due for release in May, having recently been delayed from April, and developer Naughty Dog is giving us a glimpse of the work going on behind the scenes to make the game. In the first of five making-of videos, the studio reflects on its recent history and the lessons it took from the development of The Last of Us.
The first featurette, titled “The Evolution of a Franchise,” offers commentary from several of the actors working on the game including Nolan North, Troy Baker, Emily Rose, and Richard McGonagle.
Future episodes will explore the technology being used to make the game, the character of protagonist Nathan Drake, and how Naughty Dog plans to (possibly) wrap up the franchise for good.
The game has had a somewhat rocky road to this point, suffering from several delays and a complete rewrite of the game’s story two years ago. Original writers Justin Richmond and Amy Hennig both left the company in 2014 and were replaced by The Last of Us directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley. Hennig now works at EA Visceral on unannounced Star Wars games with that studio and the Jade Raymond-headed EA Motive. There was speculation that Hennig was forced out of the company, a claim Naughty Dog has strenuously denied.
Voice actor Nolan North has said that eight months of work was abandoned when Druckmann and Straley came on board. Druckmann said the game’s story is the “biggest, most ambitious” one ever done by the studio.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is set for release on May 10th.
