DisplayPort And Display Stream’s Latest Versions And What They Do

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has announced the release of the audio/visual standard DisplayPort version 1.4.

It’s the first major update since DisplayPort since version 1.3 which was released in September 2014. 1.4 is the first version to include VESA’s Display Stream Compression tech. DSC version 1.2 allows for up to 3:1 compression ration and is considered to be visually loss-less.

This version has been design to allow for demands of high end sound and image quality using high-end electronic products.

DisplayPort can now be embedded with displays and incorporated into other connectors such ass Thunderbolt and USB Type-C interfaces. It can even be adapted for use with multiple monitors with high-resolution support on a single display interface.

DP 1.4 uses video transport compression to enhance the options for taking of using USB Type-C connectors with both SuperSpeed USB and high-definition video. The tech facilitates 8K video, High Dynamic Range (HDR), and USB-C connector.

“This significant update to the DisplayPort standard is vital to continued growth of adoption for both DP and DSC, particularly in such fast-growing markets as digital television and automotive infotainment,” said VESA Board Chair Alan Kobayashi.

“New applications are demanding displays with better resolution, wider color gamut, and increased dynamic range. Consumers and others are also recognizing the value and ease-of-use associated with running multiple displays on one interface, which is another area we addressed in this new release with MST improvements. We believe the tools provided in this new DP standard release will enable a quantum leap forward in display quality, which leverage DSC compression along with transport of high-quality audio and video content.”
