This weekend Bandai Namco made the surprise reveal of a new mobile game in the “nobody asked for this but sure why not?” category, a 16 bit endless runner game “inspired by” Dark Souls. Not developed by From Software but created with the Dark Souls series in mind, Slashy Souls is being released in partnership with Gamestop, and is now available for free on iOS and Android devices.
While not an official Dark Souls game, Slashy Souls will have elements that should be familiar to fans of the series, including weapons, potions, and bosses. You can see what the gameplay entails by catching the trailer above, which showcases a whopping 22 minutes of footage, aka more than you’ve ever cumulatively played a mobile game in your lifetime.
Nonetheless, this may quell some of the hunger pangs as you await your upcoming death(s) with the release of Dark Souls III. Or maybe not, as the “mobile endless runner” and “Dark Souls” concentric circles have zero overlap. But hey, they both have outdated graphics, so maybe there’s some overlap after all.
Dark Souls III, which will definitely not have outdated graphics, will release worldwide on April 12, 2016 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with an earlier release date of March 24 in Japan. As previously reported last week, Japan is also set to receive a special edition Dark Souls III themed PlayStation 4 bundle, because they have all the luck.
