What started out as a Half-Life 2 mod is now a series of its own. Today New World Interactive, the developers of the Middle East-set FPS Insurgency, have announced a partnership with Focus Home Interactive to bring a new game called Insurgency: Sandstorm to console and PC.
The press release is elusive but from a few details, it appears this is a new version of Insurgency that has been updated for the current generation. Described as enhancing and expanding the popular franchise, Insurgency: Sandstorm will be “rebuilt from the ground-up in Unreal Engine 4”, suggesting the title is along the lines of a remastering, rather than a full new game. Says Jeremy Blum, founder and game director of New World Interactive:
“…We believe there’s a great opportunity for Insurgency on next-gen consoles and that aligning with a strong publisher will allow us to best leverage this. Considering our background, it was not easy finding a publisher we felt compatible with. We decided to work with Focus because they understand our game and they believe in our vision. In addition, they bring a wealth of knowledge when it comes to shipping console games and marketing to that audience.”
Further details remain scarce but New World Interactive does say that Insurgency: Sandstorm will include the original game’s multiplayer co-op, while adding a brand new story mode. The original Insurgency, which debuted on January 2014, sold over 2.3 million copies on Steam. Insurgency: Sandstorm is intended for PC and console, however, it has not been specified if both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are a goal, or if the game will come to an alternate PC game retailer, like GOG.
