The Call of Duty franchise has gone through many phases over the years. At first, it was all about World War II and trying to showcase all of the most well-known battles from that time period. Then, when people grew tired of seeing new looks on the same battles, the team jumped to the Modern Warfare line and brought the gameplay into the present. When that started to lose its shine, they began to delve into the future wars humanity would be fighting. That’s where things got a bit problematic, and not surprisingly, now we’re back to WWII and Modern Warfare, with the latter releasing its rebooted second game very soon. So why is there now a rumor saying that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2 is coming?
Because that’s what a known video game insider is telling people, and this specific insider has connections to Call of Duty and has been correct about predictions in the past. Granted, that doesn’t mean they’re going to be 100% right all the time, but given the trajectory the series is on, it’s not hard to see why this might happen.
The original Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare took things to the near future and focused on soldiers having advanced technology to help them in the field of combat. Specifically, they were exosuits that would let them bound around the battlefield and give them a leg up on the enemy. When the game came out, they pushed it hard for a reason we’ll talk about later–but the reception was mixed, depending on what part of the game you played.
The campaign was mostly praised despite being somewhat predictable. Many thought the exosuits were a unique addition to the franchise and that using them was fun. However, the multiplayer modes weren’t as universally praised. Many felt the exosuits took away from the “heart of the gameplay,” primarily since multiple modes had the exosuits as a focus.
The other main issue is that the original game had a special guest star in the form of Kevin Spacey. The now infamous actor was the poster boy for the game, and a huge step forward, at the time, for the franchise. This wasn’t just someone voicing a character–this was his likeness being brought in to emphasize that they had A-List talent making this game special. Unfortunately, as noted, he’s now been listed as a disgrace in the industry, so the idea of the team continuing this line of games is problematic to some.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2 could change things for the better. It’s just unknown how outside of making the quality of life changes most want. Improving the use of exosuits would be a plus, and ensuring a deep campaign would also be a joy to players. Again, this is a rumor, but it’s worth discussing.
