When you really think about it, the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t just a bunch of superhero movies, it’s a bunch of superhero movies (and now TV shows) that tied to various subgenres that give them the context needed to stand out from the others. We’ve seen political thrillers, heist movies, ones about family (the ones you’re born with vs. the ones you find) we’ve seen coming-of-age stories like with Ms. Marvel, and so on and so forth. And the upcoming She-Hulk series is looking to add to that “format” in its own unique way.
Because according to She-Hulk head writer Jessica Gao, this show is very much a slice of life comedy that is different in how it’s presented and what the episodes are like:
“I’m really excited for Marvel to have a true half-hour comedy and really lean in to a comedy format,” Gao explained in an interview. “Everybody loves the big spectacle – all the action operating at a level that you don’t see anywhere else – but what’s special about TV is that you have the time and the space to really just live with a character and see everyday life. I want to know what’s happening on a Tuesday when the world isn’t in danger. What happens when a 6-foot-7 green woman has to buy a business suit for court?”
It does sound rather different, now doesn’t it? Though it should be noted that there will be action in the show as we’ve seen in the trailers that Jennifer Walters will have to “hulk out” in order to take on some people. But, we also see shots of her having a dating life as She-Hulk and that will be just as comedic no doubt. Oh, and some “guest stars” will be there too…
The show will debut next month, so we’ll see how it all turns out in the end.
