Enough time has passed for Rise of the Tomb Raider postmortems, and one developer has already indicated plans for the next Tomb Raider game.
In an interview, Crystal Dynamics explained their train of thought behind making Rise of the Tomb Raider bigger than its predecessor. They cited the threshold in making open worlds, where players can experience getting lost, and finding corners not everyone sees.
They were able to cross that threshold for Rise of the Tomb Raider, but giving players a greater sense that they could explore and discover these new areas.
However, Crystal Dynamics is not interested in building scale for scale’s sense. Rather, they want to create a feeling of density in their game worlds.
Therefore, the next Tomb Raider may not necessarily be as big in terms of sheer square meters, but it should feel bigger, with more things to do and find.
Perhaps the developers are also thinking of the limits of eight generation consoles, and don’t want to raise gamer expectations too much. Would you be fine with a smaller, but more meaningful Tomb Raider? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is available now on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. It will be released on Windows early this year and PlayStation 4 later this year.
