Starfield Protagonist Won’t Be Voiced, Bethesda Confirms

June 13, 2022 by Alexandra Nicholson

You could always voice your character yourself.

Fresh from yesterday’s incredibly detailed Starfield reveal during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, some further details about the epic spacefaring RPG are emerging today. In perhaps one of the more interesting nuggets of information, it’s been confirmed that your playable character in Starfield will not be voiced. This is a shift away from the dialogue system implemented in Fallout 4, in which the Sole Survivor would voice the choices players made in their dialogue interactions.

Instead, the game will feature a non-voiced protagonist, and dialogue interactions will move back towards a set of choices in a text box, in a similar style to games such as Fallout 3, Skyrim and Fallout 76. In fairness, Fallout 4’s voiced character was a bit of a deviation from the Bethesda formula and proved to be quite difficult for many players to get into.

For many gamers, this was down to the unpredictability of what the voiced character would actually say when the player chose a simple dialogue option. (Personally, I kind of liked the chaos of it, but to each their own.) Bethesda won’t be taking that kind of risk with Starfield, opting instead to revert to voiceless text box choices for NPC conversations.

Bethesda has also confirmed that dialogue interactions will take place in first-person camera mode, meaning players can look forward to some up close and personal facetime with the vast array of NPCs in Starfield. The reveal of the character customisation options in Starfield showed us just how much depth and detail players can expect from their playable character, so even without a voice, we’re sure there’ll be plenty of personality and individuality to inject into your adventurer.

Starfield is planned to release at some point in 2023 exclusively on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC. It will be playable on day one with Xbox Game Pass.
