Fallout 4’s Combat Designed With the Aid of Destiny and id Software Devs

November 4, 2015 by Stephen Daly

Former Destiny developer joined Bethesda after six years at Bungie.

Fallout 4's shooting mechanics were designed by the Bethesda Game Studios team with the help of a former Destiny developer and staff from Doom and Rage creator id Software.

Game Informer's story on the RPG in their latest magazine issue says Bethesda saw the shooter as a reference point due to the fact that both games output at 30fps.

"The main difference in the way we develop [and other studios] is that we will develop with as many knobs as possible," Fallout 4 director Todd Howard commented. "We're always thinking of scale. We're not a team that is just going to make eight guns and spend forever on one gun. We knew we were going to have thousands, so we needed to develop a gun system that had all of the dials."

Josh Hamrick, who joined Bethesda after six years at Bungie, is a senior systems designer on the game who's role in Fallout 4's development is "focused intently on tuning [Fallout 4's] firearms." Hamrick also helped design the game's remote play PlayStation Viita controls.

The game changes the VATS system from the previous entries in the series, instead of stopping time, it now slows it down substantially, allowing you to target specific enemy body parts to attack.

Fallout 4 comes to PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
